How saddening!! Some structures just don’t stand a chance to survive. Neglected by the OWNER(s), and left abandoned to rot away to the point of no saving it.. Especially in the D/FW area it seems..
Life Goes On..
I have some photos I took of the ole Joy Drive In, link below! Totally gone now, I also have some of the Indoor Theatre but I’ve yet to post them (yet)..
Enjoy..

I went to Sky-Vue back around 1999.. Stopped for a movie, and met Mr Kirkland. Super nice guy.. Gave me a T-Shirt that I still have today. Never worn. Nice keep-sake now.. SO saddening about this historical drive in theatre. He started there helping out the snack bar, etc, and eventually bought the drive in..
Anyone know if Mr Kirkland is still around.?
Thanx!

At the time mark of 3:44 in this video, you can see the ‘'Elite’‘ theatre still standing in 1973.. Originally the ’‘White’‘ theatre.. The building to the right of the ole theatre still stands today.

Some time between June 2012 and May 2016, this appears to have stopped business as a theatre. It’s showing, per googlemaps, as a place called Bezzela Event…

I was told back in November of 2020, that Buck Owens son, Buddy Alan, still owns this property & It was still being used as a recording studio when I was here photographing the structure..

Wow! How strange is this?? TO be renovated then tore down? Sounds fishy to me as it sounds to me, that some one or some people did not want this drive in to re-open!!! AS it sat unused for many years.
I’m hearing that this drive in was demolished.. I hope this isn’t true.. Sure was hoping it would be reopened!!
Anyone know?? Thanx!!

This photo of Screen #1, taken with My P&S Film Camera back on February 2 1999, is The Astro Drive In Theatre located in Oak Cliff (Dallas) Texas. DEMOLISHED. This drive in opened in 1968/69. Closed November 1998 Due to Fire in the Concessions Stand. Altho it could have been re-built, it was demolished in February of 1999. The Last operating Drive In Theatre in Dallas now gone.

I believe the address is actually 1012 N. Conway.. The facade of that appears to be the ole Theatre is still there..
Today it is called “Amigo Rent to Own”.
Some (possible) awesome news!! This drive in is being revived!! The newspaper in the area is stating that this is to reopen in late May 2021! This is some great news! GOOD LUCK on getting the ole Redland going again!! Light up that screen!!
Best.

DID U KNOW?? ..>The song “Drive-In” was inspired by the group’s (Beach Boys) outings at the Studio Drive-In in Culver City, California.
