I wish I could tell you more about the Syria Mosque’s history (can’t find anything, so I’ll have to go by memory)
Formerly located in Oakland, the University of Pittsburgh bought the Syria Mosque and demolished it to make way for a parking lot (sad, I know). The shriners built a new Mosque in Cheswick, but does not handle concerts.
The Mosque had a main theater for concerts (I seen Great White there) and a ballroom downstairs (saw Don Dokken and Trixter there.)
The building was demolihed in 1991.
Wish I had more info.
The Pittsburgh Symphony currently performs at Heinz Hall.
Too many other theaters sit empty (Denis, Parkway, Eastland, New Granada, South Hills). Something needs done to reopen them up and use them as theaters (movies, performing arts)
Star City just reopened as a bargain cinema under the name Screenworks 14. No website available, but here is a link to an article from the Post Gazette View link
I am loving this news big time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now hopefully the South Hills, Parkway, New Granada and The Denis can reopen! I wanted the King’s Court to reopen, but that looks like something else is sadly opening up. And the Garden utilized improperly. :(
Does anyone remember the old airplane that was in front of the theater?
Does anyone have the story about that?
Not much of a difference visually.
Are we able to use “add a photo” yet?
Here is the official website…

This is more great news for Pittsburgh!!!
Do you have an email address for the person who took the picture?
Does anyone know what the usage of the New Granada will be?
This is excellent news!
Question anbout the balcony, don’t you need reservations to sit there?
Great picture Patsy!
The mall has been demolished (including the theater too)

I’d love to see it as a mid size concert venue. Since the Syria Mosque closed in the early 90s Pittsburgh concerts have not been the same.
Here is a new new article about the New Granada…

Here is an article in today’s Post Gazette regarding the future of the Garden.

A friend informed me that the Garden has shut its doors.
The building has been demolished within the past week.
Has anyone heard if the theater is going to stay and be renovated? Hopefully so. Pittsburgh needs a decent concert hall.
Hopefully the New Granada and King’s Court are next (maybe the Parkway in Stowe Twp. as well)

I know there are photos of the CW at the Carengie library in Oakland.
My coworker who’s hubby works at Chatham center now says the former space is totaly vacant.
Neither links work.
The poster for ACAS is still hanging up outside the theater (faded though)
Looks like the KC is being remodeled. Not sure to what now. Sadly I think it wil be retail.
Shame on the Beehive owners!!! Oakland needed a theater. Now what!?!?!? (Don’t tell me about the Melwood Screening Room either! No thank you!)
