The Howard in Taylor went digital both upstairs and down. This happened the weekend following the day I took the pix on June 19, 2003. Here’s a few photos of the booths and equipment and of the auditoriums.
That is true. The guy that has it now said they were operational after all these years. When I was there, they turned over very smoothly. Would have loved to have seen the place in it’s prime.
Found some negatives I took in the 80’s of the mural while it was sorta new. The photo at the top of this page was the mural while Tower Records was in the building. The fire escape was taken down and a window was cut into the south corner of the building. There are 4 detail photos at my link.
To sepiatone, if you get to Austin this summer before Aug.17, the Austin History Center has an excellent display set up with photos and artifacts from the earliest Austin movie theaters through the 1970’s

I was stationed at SJAFB 69-70. Was able to work a few shifts at this theater when it was a single screen. It was a nice theater with mag/stereo at the time. They showed WOODSTOCK here and my room mate and I stayed here all day to watch it. I had to leave early evening to pull a booth shift on base at the base theater then came back later to pick up my room mate.
The Ganado now has digital projection as of this weekend. Here is a current photo. Be sure to eat at the Ganado Cafe next door. You won’t be disappointed.
Wow, ran it in 70mm around 2000 or 2001 at the Paramount here in Austin, Tx. Always wondered why 24fps 70mm reels never came close to filling the reels. At 30fps, they were very full…and heavy. The Century JJ’s were especially noisy at 30fps too. But, it was like looking through a clear window. The image was so smooth and clear. Very impressive.
I might be wrong but I’m thinking the Freis is a owners name maybe. Here is a photo of the Nixon. Have no idea where I came across this theater photo but it matches the later pictures attached above by LOST MEMORY.
Seems to be a girl in the box office on the right and it almost looks like maybe a popcorn machine on the sidewalk next to the man. Maybe? I’ve been to this place. The building is gone but you can see the tile floor of the entrance and where the restrooms were.
I’m sad to say it might not be in operation any more. This Easter weekend I passed through Gonzales and the TOOTH FAIRY is still in the poster boxes. Last time their web site was updated was Feb. 12, 2010 with THE TOOTH FAIRY listed for that date. Damn it, I hope they can get it going again.
No, it is not an atmospheric. More classical in nature. Yeah, we’d love to have the vertical PARAMOUNT sign back. The theater will be 100 in 2015 and another face lift is hopefully in the works.
Here is a Christmas Eve 2009 photo of the Edna. I hadn’t seen it at night before other than in pictures. Really special theater. T\Smythe, the owner of the Ganado theater has access to the theater if you are in the area. He has a neat theater too. He has a new sign and neon as of this past thanksgiving 09.

From what I’ve seen of it, it had to be a very special, modern theater in it’s day. I wish them all the luck in the world.

An image of Saint Cecilia painted on the ceiling.
I agree. All it would take is lots of $$$$$$.

Thanks!
The new paint job looks great. Here’s a night time photo of the neon taken Christmas eve 2009.
