I am confused with some of the posts above. What is the reason Avengers won’t be displayed in 3D Imax in the LS Imax?
digital3d, Cineworld has had it’s own Unlimited Movie Pass for years. Moviepass will soon be history when AMC and Regal both pull out of that stupid scheme. AMC will start one as well and you will pay twice, or not at all.
I don’t think it’s (just) the location that’s the issue. It’s that Landmark 57 doesn’t accept MoviePass.
There is simply no reason for me to go there and spend 18 bucks on a movie when I can get MoviePass to pay for it at another theater. (Like Linc Square for instance, much closer to the subway too). With “Journey’s End” it’s a special scenario, since they were the only theater playing that movie. But often they play the same stuff as a bunch of other Manhattan theaters.
It’s really a shame, given how much money was put into Landmark 57 and how it’s a clean, newly built multiplex. I hope it doesn’t go bankrupt, will start to accept MoviePass and see a nice surge in patrons.
Hello-
have any other frequent patrons at this theater visited the new Landmark 57th St.? I went yesterday to see Journey’s End. the theater is state of the art and the film was first rate but there were more staff than patrons. as I posted when the 57th St. was about to open who does Landmark think is going to trek to the Westside Highway(its right next to the 57th St.) to see a movie?
that would seem odd Heisen considering for 3D ‘brightness’ is actually boosted for dimensionality to work, the only element that is causing darkness would be the IMAX glasses. Of the two ‘laser’(Smithsonian Institute) IMAX theaters in and around the Washington DC area, the brightness is consistent and impressive and shows off how beneficial ‘laser’ (IMAX) projection is in overall state of the art presentation.
At least the audio will be good for both versions.
I really wish I could agree with all of you in that the IMAX 3D in Lincoln looks just as good, but even after the Laser renovations I still notice a glaring dip in quality, speaking from experience. It does look better than your typical 3D in an average theater, but when compared to the 2D in Lincoln I feel like the colors are still definitely off and not as bright as they are for 2D.
@alpinedownhiller- I believe it was said Infinity War will be finished in 4K (makes sense since it was shot on IMAX digital cameras). Though as you point out, all IMAX lasers DCPs are 4K, using upscaling when a film’s regular DCP is 2K.
@HeisenDiaN – don’t forget though that Laser IMAX 3D still looks very bright AND (assuming the DCP is 4k) will still be in full 4k (or at least well upscaled 2k)
I don’t know if 2D really looks miles better. With IMAX Laser, 3D looks very good as well. The colors don’t get dimmed like they do with realD 3D.
With Black Panther they just switched it up day by day. One day 2D and one day 3D. Might be because it’s complicated for them to switch from 2D to 3D every showing, though I’m not sure of that.
Infinity War seems to go the route of The Last Jedi with IMAX 3D only.
But it will still have the extended aspect ratio, the laser projection and the 12 channel sound. So it’s still a great way to see the movie, even if you’re not a big 3D fan.
Well, I could see them adding in IMAX 2D showings later in the run like they did with The Last Jedi here, since it should hold IMAX screens until Solo or at least Deadpool 2.
Going by Fandango, it looks like there will be a fair mix of IMAX 3D and 2D screenings in NYC, with it being 3D here, 2D at Penn Station, and alternating showings at Kips Bay and AMC Empire, and I think giving a range of options is better than the just 2D and just 3D IMAX releases they often do.
@bigjoe:
Yeah, 100%. In fact I just checked the new showtimes for Regal Union Square and CMBYN has been extended for another week and is scheduled there at least until the 20th.
“The Shape of Water” also had it’s home video release yesterday and that’s still scheduled for a bunch of places including Lincoln Square. The new KDM for TSOW for instance (I just checked on foxkeys.com, see screenshot at https://imgur.com/AGFm2Dc) is good until March 23rd. Fox simply sent out a new key and boom- Lincoln Square can play it another week.
No problem, I’m happy to describe this stuff! :)
Hello-
I thank digital3d for a detailed reply. I had never heard the term KDM before. now if i understand the other part of your reply correctly in your opinion it is conceivable that though the dvd/blu-ray came out yesterday Tues. 3/13 Sony Pictures Classics might keep CMBYN at the Union Square for however long it still brings in the crowds?
Even my local movie theater in Rockaway, nj draws big crowds from all over northwest Jersey and even afar due to its proximity to route 80.
KDM stands for “Key Delivery Message”. Since the digital movie files are mostly all encrypted (for security reasons, such as fear of piracy), they require a digital code (a “key”) to unlock (decrypt) them. That’s the KDM.
These KDM’s however work only for a limited time period. They expire after some time, after which the studio has to send a new one. If the studio doesn’t, then the theater simply won’t be able to play the movie anymore.
If you go to www.foxkeys.com (password and username are both “fox”), you can go to each theater and see what KDM’s Fox sends out there to theaters and when each one expires.
Regarding crowds: I see plenty of crowds at Lincoln Square too. For some reason, especially after MoviePass but even before, New Yorkers really love to go to the movies. Look at Alamo in Brooklyn. They sell out 10PM shows on weekdays. I don’t know how, but they do it.
Hello-
I thank digital3d for a detailed reply. I have seen Call Me By Your Name many times at the Regal Union Square and each showing has been jammed packed if not sold out. so since its been out nearly 4 months its nice its still doing decent biz. if I am not mistaken since opening it has only played the Paris and the Union Square. so it was nice to see it still doing packed business the week after the Oscars. I wonder since the dvd/blu-ray came out today if the business at the Union Square will tapper off. it would be interesting to see it this again weekend just to see what the crowd size is.
also what is a KDM?
It will probably remain if crowds keep showing up. Look at Darkest Hour. That was available for rent and purchase for weeks and it’s still playing in 3 NYC theaters, one of them AMC and one Regal.
In the end thr studio decides. (As I mentioned they can just stop sending updated KDMs). But if the film keeps making bucks at the the theater there is no reason for the studio to do that.

I have been thinking of digital3d’s 3/5 comment. for' instance this past Sat. 3/10 i saw Call Me By Your Name again. while Best Adapted Screenplay is nice to win i figured more than likely the film or films that would benefit winning Oscars the most are the Best Picture and Best Director winners. so I was surprised that the 3p.m. screening at the Union Square was say 85% full. one wonders if the dvd/ blu-ray of CMBYN coming out tomorrow 3.13 will effect the film being pulled or can the Union Square keep it as long as it makes $$$?

The Phantom Thread in 70MM ended tonight after 11 weeks and 342 showings.
I’m not sure why they would ever want to pull it from a theater. If anything, they’d be more wanting to pull the home video.
Any eta on when this theater will be renovated?
@bigjoe: They can just discontinue sending a new key. (KDM)
But I’ve read in forums that usually the studios allow the movies to continue playing if they do well in that theater.
But yes, if the studio wanted to they could just stop sending a renewed KDM and the theater wouldn’t be able to play the movie any longer.
Hello-
I have a question about exhibition that I hope someone can help me with. it seems the window between when a film opens to when the dvd/blu/ray comes out has gotten smaller the years. in fact if a film is successful enough it may still be in its 1st run engagements when the dvd/blu-ray comes out. which is where my question comes in. if a film is still doing decent business when the dvd/blu-ray is released can the distribution company pull it even if the theater wants to continue playing it?
for instance of the films up for Oscars last night some did in fact win. so if one of these is still doing decent enough business that a theater might want to continue playing it can the distribution company pull it anyway?
Hey there, anyone have any insider details on when the Avengers Infinity Wars pre-sale will go up? Thanks!
