Albert Keogh and his sister, Mrs. Frank Kemp, have sold the Hillcrest Theater in San Diego to a partnership. Keogh plans to move to Phoenix, AZ.
In August Keogh and his sister disposed of their two other houses, the Seville in Chula Vista and the La Paloma in Encinitas. They retain ownership of the buildings in which the theaters are housed.
Jeanette Shoeneman has announced an October 18 opening for her new Chief Theater in Wahoo. It is a remodeled building located just across from the Wahoo Theater, which Miss Shoeneman also owns.
Here is part of an LA Times article dated 10/6/54:
Amid the Byzantine-Gothic-East Los Angeles artchitecture of the Million Dollar Theater, a lusty band of Mexican vaudevillians are doing their stuff these days, with comedians Manolin and Schillinsky the chief twinklers.
Dancing gets a whirl on the bill. Los Colegiales are two men and a girl. One of the boys is a real comic, doing eccentric stepping for tops in laughs. The boys do buck-and-wing and tap, also jitterbug with the girl, and she helps out with a fairly comic sketch.
Tonsil artists are too many and too mal. Even Hermanos Martinez gang up on the mike with thunderous result. Tony Moro’s singing of “I’m in a Mood for Love” puts one pretty much in a mood for murder, what with the mike’s malice. As for Lupita Moran, pretty and graceful, probably the rafters of the old theater never have wrung or been wrung with anything quite so harrowing as her voice.

SULZER WINS ELMIRANS; A Big Crowd Enjoys His Speech Dealing with Labor Problems
ELMIRA, N.Y., Oct. 25. — Congressman Sulzer and Martin Glynn reached Elmira at 8:40 o'clock to-night in a special train from Binghamton, and were met by Mayor Sheehan, Alexander C. Eustace, and Frank Gannett. The party was escorted to the Colonial Theatre, where more than 2,000 persons had assembled. The meeting was large and enthusiastic. Assemblyman Bush presided, and Mr. Glynn spoke first.

650 Leave Theater when Oil Burner Backfires
PHILADELPHIA-About 650 patrons of a north side theater filed out in orderly fashion when a basement oil burner backfired, filling the auditorium with smoke. It took about five minutes to evacuate the Temple Theater while the projectionist played music over the sound track amplifiers.
Manager Charles Thompson, three ushers and a policeman helped to guide the people to the street through the main doors and emergency exits shortly before 9 p.m., before the last show got underway.
After noticing the smoke Benjamin Horowitz, projectionist, immediately switched off the picture, turned on the lights and started the music. Leroy Dreisback, head usher, leaped on the stage and started the evacuation. Virginia Kuntz, cashier, locked her booth and notified the policeman on the beat, who called firemen.
This is part of an August 2007 article in the Albany Times-Union:
Aug. 10—Outside the Spectrum 8 movie theater in Albany, the midday sky is a blazing iridescent blue. But lower your gaze just a bit to the northern wall of the theater, and the sky abruptly transforms into an angry red, crowded with dozens of spectral crows. Below are several human silhouettes in various poses, some staring up at a giant, crouching man whose eyes appear to bulge out to his upper lip.
Despite the fact that the scene on the wall evokes a cold, storm-soaked feeling, the Albany artists who go by the names Mr. Prvrt, Dwell and One Unit are still sweating, shielding their faces from the hot sun as they map out their next move.
For the past few weeks, the three street artists have spent nearly every day outside the Spectrum, painting this colossal mural that will cover the entire 30-foot-high-100-foot-long wall, which leads from the rear parking lot to the front of the building on Delaware Avenue.
“It’s more street art,” said Dwell. “It’s shoved down your throat like graffiti should be.”

MOUNT VERNON.â€"A 12-year-old girl missing from her Yonkers home for a week was found unharmed yesterday in the Biltmore theater here. Police said the girl, Josephine Leach, had run away from home after a quarrel with her mother, although fear had been expressed earlier that she might have been abducted.
Detectives came upon the girl after searching all theaters in a large area of Mount Vernon, a New York suburb, on a tip that she had been seen in another movie house some distance away. Only a few hours before, the girl’s trail was picked up when a minister and his wife found she had been in their apartment, in a mixed white and colored section of Mount Vernon, while they were absent earlier in the day.
Popular television talk show host Oprah Winfrey, who has been helping to pick up the tab for Habitat for Humanity houses across the nation, will be in Kosciusko this week when a new home is dedicated. Winfrey, who spent her early years in this small central Mississippi community, will attend the Saturday afternoon dedication and answer questions of fans at the Attala County Coliseum. Her movie,“Beloved”, will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Strand Theater.
I think you’re right. PNC Bank, the large building, is at 4101. The next building is H&R Block, which is 4113. The theater would have between the two buildings, which is the parking lot. Looks like the theater has been demolished.
Ed, there is a bank at 4112 Butler. All of the buildings on the odd side of the street, including 4109, look old. Are you sure the theater was razed for a parking lot?
