to answer your question thebrat: supposedly all the screens are digital, although the last time I asked when ‘Ted’ got released and was being shown on screen 1 (the largest screen) it was still 35mm. I’m sure there are other screens in the DC area that are showing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in 35mm, but I definitely know that the Avalon over in Chevy Chase, literally maybe a 10 minute walk east from Mazza is showing it in 35mm.

Giles commented about Regency Village Theatre on Jul 21, 2012 at 2:46 pm

is this the same theater that in70mm.com is stating that is getting an exclusive 70mm engagement of P.T Anderson’s latest film ‘The Master’ (come this October)?

“The classic Village Theatre, in the Westwood Village/west Los Angeles area of L.A. is reported to be in view as a site for a 70mm run of the new film from Paul Thomas Anderson (PT Anderson), "The Master”. Although the Village hasn’t run a 70mm print for many years, a 70mm conversion kit for their venerable Norelco/Philips DP70 has been tracked down, and, pending final decisions and arrangements, it seems likely that L.A. will have its first commercial engagement of a new movie, presented “in the splendor of 70mm” in many years (last known previous one was “Hamlet”, back in December 1996)."

I love the ice cream here at the Egyptian.

As for ‘Spiderman’ the only extra scene came early on during the credit crawl.

I thought the 7.1 mix on the XD screen for ‘Prometheus’ was beyond stellar.

personally I’m all for the theaters themselves creating specialty big screens – it means that other non-IMAX films get the deluxe treatment, it also helps that these screens have at least 7.1 surround sound capabilities, while IMAX is the traditional 5.0 audio setup.

… and AMC’s ETX, Marcus' Ultrascreens, Galaxy Theater’s DFX (Digital Fusion Experience, and Carmike’s Big-D screens

I know this is a problem also at the Arclight Dome, but is it as severe? I don’t know if this true, but supposedly this can be rectified on the Christie projector lense but at a significant cost – I would rather AMC talk with Chrisite and see if something can’t be done and not go down the path of removing the curved screen.

can’t wait to see what the programming will be like. Also curious if the projection will be 35mm and/or digital

Recently all the screens have been converted to digital projection (Barco) and three auditoriums can playback 7.1 surround sound.

interesting/great article – my only question: is the projection going to be 35mm and digital projection?, or just the latter?

Giles commented about D.C. Church to take over former Meaders Theatre on Jul 5, 2012 at 5:26 pm

well the theater is reverting back a movie theater as a recent Washington Post article noted:

““We hope to be able to start showing movies . . . in late November or December,” Mark Batterson, National Community Church’s lead pastor, wrote in an e-mail. “It’s always been our desire to share it with the community,” he added.

The new theater will not compete with local megaplexes, of course.

“The Miracle will be a sub-run theater that will show a variety of films,” Batterson said. “In addition, for the many families on Capitol Hill, we plan to feature a heavy dose of children’s programming, mixing family films and live performances by children’s entertainers.”

The hall will also be available for community meetings, school productions and other neighborhood events."

ugh – I hate the picture quality of Fathom Events.

the screening of this at the recent LA TCM Film Festival was 4K DCP – and from what I’ve read was pretty stunning looking.

as for the Cinemark screenings, thankfully they book and present the films from higher encoded DCP hard drives.

I agree with Cliff, it’s the last place I want to see a movie at, it’s simply too large. So ‘Brave’ is here … and… the El Capitan down the block, interesting that the booking allowed this.

Giles commented about AFI Silver Theatre on Jun 28, 2012 at 5:55 pm

I thought DTS 70mm prints retained the five front channel configurement? I agree about wanting to seeing the few 70mm animated films on the big screen: ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘The Black Cauldron’. As for the rare screening of ‘Porgy and Bess’ … two screenings on the Labor Day weekend Sunday and Monday in the afternoon … really?… again (I refer back to ‘Patton’ on Memorial Day weekend)… I have to sacrifice one of the weekend days – crap! A Tuesday evening would have been more ideal – hell, any evening screening is more ideal than the 1pm and 4pm screenings that seem to be the norm for this premier festival – what sucky times.

It’s a shame that ‘Cleopatra’ wasn’t available – the new UK bluray of the film is pretty spectacular looking though.

^ that New Jersey theater that is getting the Atmos auditorium for ‘Brave’ is AMC Garden State 16 by the way.

no, I mean when the new Arclight theaters open in 2014, is it replacing these auditoriums or will they exist in tandem of each other.

Giles commented about AMC Tysons Corner 16 on Jun 13, 2012 at 8:14 pm

saw ‘Madagascar 3’ on the ETX screen the other day, and my mouth was on the floor – the colors were eye-assaulting – for once the projector was properly calibrated and no double imaging – outside of being wowed by the color intensity of the bluray of ‘Speed Racer’ – this movie was not only fun, but it was by far the best in color reproduction and clarity that digital projection can (and should) offer. On the flipside though, the 7.1 soundmix was practically non-existent, not a fault of the ETX soundsystem, but the folk actually created the mix – it was no where as creative or impressive as ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ 7.1 mix I had seen the week prior. (or even ‘Prometheus’ at the Egyptian for that matter)

Giles
Giles commented about Cinerama Hollywood on Jun 13, 2012 at 8:06 pm

thanks for the response Zubi – I think (and gather) Warner is shooting itself in the foot by not encoding the five front speaker sound configurement on harddrive DCP form – the layout is there and possible, but so far no studio has encoded it as such for digital projection – and specifically preserving 70mm soundmixes for future generations.

Giles commented about Movies at Montgomery Mall on Jun 13, 2012 at 8:00 pm

so I’m confused, Arclight just announced that is opening it’s debut East Coast theater here at Montgomery Mall in 2014 – is this theater closing? are they building a larger adjunct theater? It’s all speculation at this point, since the news was made last week, but this exciting news since these auditoriums are on the antiquated side.

Giles commented about Boutique movie theater coming to North Bethesda on Jun 13, 2012 at 7:49 pm

wait, so this is opening in 2014 AS WELL AS the just announced Arclight cinemas at Montgomery Mall – Bethesda is certainly upping the game in terms of construction of new movie theaters

I’m looking forward in knowing what theaters have upgraded to the new Dolby Atmos system. As for HFR (high frame rate) movies, Regal is upgrading all it’s 3D projectors to be able to playback movies as such. Cinemark’s XD screens will also see the upgrade.
