According to an article dated 12/3/36 in the Woodland Democrat, work was started on the Fortuna at that time to replace another theater that was at the same address. That theater was destroyed in a fire in late November 1936.
If the 915 Broad Street address is correct, then it wouldn’t be speculation. City Hall at 920 Broad, across the street, hasn’t gone anywhere in the past fifty years.
Looking at the Google photo, I would have to agree with Luis in his post of 6/29/08. The Rialto would have been across the street from City Hall. There are nothing but trees on that side of the street now. Status should be closex/demolished.
The Payless shoe store to the left of the Nixon Building is listed at 32 S. 52nd Street. I do agree that this building doesn’t resemble the theater building, though. The Nixon family was prominent in theater circles in the early part of the twentieth century, so this may be a coincidence.
This is a photo of the building at the address today. It’s indistinct in the photo, but it says “Nixon Building” at the top. Is it possible that the theater building is still standing? If so, a lot of the architectural details seen in the older photos have been removed. http://tinyurl.com/3ntmwz
This is one of the businesses at the former theater address. As much as I go to this mall, I still don’t understand where the theater was. I assume we’re talking about the east side with Trader Joes’s, Islands, and the rest, correct? http://tinyurl.com/3ha2r4

I posted the story, but then it changed screens to say I had to log in to return. Does it show the story when you click on the link?
That’s cute. Anyway, the story says a real estate developer wants to turn the property into a retail center.
The De Anza may be doomed, according to this May 2008 article from the Arizona Daily Star:

The Rebel was still open in 1981, according to the motion picture almanac of that year. Owner at that time was T.E. Watson.
Landmark is listed as running the theater in the 1981 Motion Picture Almanac, so sometime between 1970 and 1980, I imagine.
The Rodeo was still listed in the 1981 Motion Picture Almanac. Owner was E&W Management. Capacity was 500 cars.
The 1970 IMPA shows the Roxy as still part of the Rothstein circuit.
The Roxy was part of the Rothstein theater circuit in the early 1960s.

We also have your news article from 7/6/07 which puts the theater in the same block.

OK, I know which one that is. I will take a few photos the next time I’m out there. Thanks.
A Chicago public library card will cost me $100 since I’m out of state. I guess I won’t be doing that.
