I drove by this building last night by chance. It still looks exactly the same. There were not any “Visionary Theatres” signs, etc.

I’m not looking to start an argument LM, and you are certainly entitled to your opinion. But I think any historical information related to a given theatre property is valuable, and that would include old phone numbers. The purpose of this web site is to create a historical mosaic.

In addition, I think it could be fun for someone who grew up in the neighborhood. Such a person might see that phone number and say, “I remember that phone number! I dialed it a thousand times!” Good memories, and so on.

I was able to grow a full beard at age 17 and went wherever I pleased (until I got sick of the beard and shaved).

You make an interesting point LM. I don’t think that would happen today, although it is a big world out there. Ditto for returning the veterans money.

Photos that were shot and cataloged but never selected for actual publication? I have to figure that Life photographers took many more photos than those that actually made it into the magazine pages.

What state is the building in now? It sounds half torn apart.

The speech goes on forever. But then at the end they finally light the sign:

It appears that this should now be the official web site:

This isn’t the most elaborate web design in the world. But it is clear that they spent a little bit of money to make sure the results turned out to be respectable.

Definitely looks like a former theatre building to me. I’d say there isn’t much doubt.

Version of history I have always heard is that Rapp & Rapp did the office building, while Lansburgh was responsible for the theatre design.

That’s the one I was thinking of (Jan 21 08 post). Haven’t seen pictures of it in years. Nice find Brian.

I wonder why it hasn’t been added on this site. Never a movie theatre maybe?

They really need to relax. I don’t like Bush & Cheney either. But this is just silly.

The capital markets are extremely volatile right now. I can understand why they are putting off this IPO.

Did they tear down that office building with the turrets? Last time I was downtown it was still there. I’d be pretty surprised if it was gone.

Regarding BW’s comment of 9/28: I guess it is time to restore the restoration. Definitely an interesting turn of events. It sounds as if MSG Entertainment may have struck a deal with the office building behind the theatre.

Pretty sure I saw some years ago at THS. If my memory is correct they must still be there.

I can’t believe there is still an elevator operator. I remember seeing that ten years ago and thinking it wouldn’t last much longer.

I’ll bet there can’t be more than 100 elevator operators left in the entire U.S.

The Nortown in Chicago served as a Pakistani-American community center, and looked pretty run down during this period. It lasted for quite a while, so I suppose the arrangement worked for them.

This is based on foggy recollection. But I didn’t think they did any concerts until the last few years of operation. That would have been 1979-82, or something like that.
