Loews Lincoln Sq shows 70mm IMAX, but haven’t been showing regular 70mm to my knowledge. In addition to Village East, Walter Reade Theatre has had classic 70mm festivals. And, City Cinemas 1,2,3 has shown new 70 mm, soon the Batman vs Superman.
JodarMovieFan, from the website
Remodeled in 2014-2015 by the City of Greenbelt, today the Theatre has 380 seats, a 40’ CinemaScope screen, two Simplex XL 35mm projectors, a Christie 4K digital projector, and a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound system. In 2015, Friends of Greenbelt Theatre signed a contract with the City of Greenbelt to operate the Theatre as a non-profit organization.
Screens 30 feet and 20 feet wide according to this article http://therealdeal.com/2015/12/23/lets-all-go-to-the-lobby-two-new-cinemas-to-debut-next-year/
Last night the Republican candidates for president debated at the Fox Theatre. Shown on Fox TV & elsewhere, the lit marquee & exterior, the grand lobby and the auditorium all looked glorious!
I forgot this one is a for profit, but still it cost mucho to operate a theater all year. No reason to pass along discounts if someone is trying to earn a profit leasing it……
There are one or two offs in multiplexes (Fathom events) but nationwide so with different economics. Frankly, these calculations are already done- if the nonprofit theater could profit from classic movie screenings, they’d do them. They are members of national organizations & they know what their competition does. Some will charge a set fee to let you choose the classic screening but that’s only the choice of film. As to rate, they have no interest in your intruding so there are no rates for this purpose. Birthday party, sure. You to profit off a classic screening: No.
Classic movie screenings anywhere are often lucky if they recover merely the cost of the film rental! If you pro rate the expenses of running a theater (staff, utilities, tax, etc)& then charge you the appropriate rent, you won’t be renting any historic theater to show classic films!!
Ok, I’m going to say this just once. As an official volunteer here, I’ve asked & gotten the removal of some of his comments. I left the 2-24 comment because frankly it didn’t go so far as some of the more offending posts. But, if everybody doesn’t stop attacking everybody, more posts are going to disappear. And, notably, stick to the cinemas. Discuss IMAX as much as you like. There may be plenty of reasons to cite presidential candidates but NOT on this website.
The Bardovan has its own page here so please post there. Quick google search does indicate it has as recently as 2013 boasted of showing 35mm, so probably still doing so.
from Phila Inquirer obit online today-
Harry Jay Katz, who had been a Philadelphia fixture for a half-century, died Tuesday at Einstein Hospital in Elkins Park. He was 75 and had been admitted a few days earlier after several months at the Hillcrest Center Nursing Home in Wyncote.
Death was from natural causes and he died peacefully, his family said.
Although he was independently wealthy, and was often called a “playboy,” Katz dabbled in a number of ventures, not all successful, rather than just sit on his wealth.
His biggest accomplishment was reopening the magnificent Erlanger Theater at 21st and Market Streets in the late 1960s as a nightclub, café and venue for theater productions.

The “CT group” is reading the comments. Perhaps eventually, action, in linking theater pages to these posts, but in the meantime, happiness that there’s homepage news. And quite pleased to see no spammers right this moment- we try to eliminate those very quickly.
Spectre was the 3rd James Bond movie in a row I’ve seen here! Once a year, I like to be in London, and been fortunate enough to be able to plan timing of vacation to see the Bond films. As to surround sound, even the Rear Circle is great!
I don’t know re booth angle. I do enjoy the Circle at the Odeon L. Sq., most recently saw Spectre and Legend there during my Fall vacation. I’d prefer the Royal Circle but more often sit in Rear Circle due to the price difference.
What isn’t being specified here is The Hateful Eight was made in a process not used in 50 years, since Khartoum, UltaPanavision 70, so 2.76 wide times height, meaning not as tall. Usually 70mm is 2.2 wide (for scope films) though The Master was “flat” so not so wide. Properly projected, Hateful Eight end credits shouldn’t have looked curved. Didn’t see them that way at AFI Silver outside of Washington D.C.
Bill, on Feb 8 you added a “Leading Events Today” item to the photo gallery but I don’t see Ziegfeld relevance. Was something cut off the item or what don’t I understand?
maybe Dreamgirls in 2007 but don’t tell me a short period of time doesn’t count.

Theaters do rent out. $10,000 or so for a film premiere, etc.

People would’ve happily purchased the chairs, at least the end chairs with Z on them.
And, this IS a sad picture.
It sounded to me like the screen was properly masked for The Hateful Eight but trailers etc before subject to that extra masking.
I’ve added a comment to the photo so it would confuse everybody else, too.
in response to bigjoe59 asking for the TV listings for a certain day in 1950.

Also, Gandhi (1981) was shown for 31 weeks, another famous film showcased prominently here!
