Robin. You got to be kidding. Are you sure you did business on MASTERS week. Remember, the shopping center took 80% of the parking to sell for the golf fans. When I was at National Hills we had to have a special sticker to park. There was no parking! If you guys did business it was walk-up from the neighborhoods behind the theatre,It was a dead period when i was there in the mid 70’s.
yes, this Nick is a friend of mine and Bill Barkley,All of us are hard core Theatre Dawgs.Go to his site,he’s got some great stories on his Tampa Theatres.
Okay, okay, Most of my relatives are from Tennessee,Iam not knocking the VOL state.I just made a mistake, one of the MANY i havemade on CT. I really thought they were out of Georgia. However,my Atlanta statement was wrong. According to my 1956 orange Motion Picture Almanac MARTIN THEATRES were based in Columbus,GEORGIA!!! 1308 Broadway. In 1956. They could have moved to Nashville later.
TLSLOEWS,I wanted to do so much more on the Barnwell Drive-ins,but it is about an hour away from here.Need to get to the local paper for better reserch.I am amazed how some of these CT folks can come up with so much. Nick, spends hours on his Tampa theatres and it shows.
Tlsloews, when Nick visited me I showed him National Hills Theatre,so he knows it is ACROSS the Street from the MASTERS. Not much left of National Hills but the theatre itself. One large box with everything else gone.
Well, let me add even though I live in a smaller city{thankgoodness} I don’t recall it ever playing here, not because of the X rating,Weis Cinemas had no problem showing X,I think smaller markets got it later,No mass openings like today; so think the news on it being a stinker Theatre chains pulled away from it. It might have played at the IMPERIAL with the “R” rating on a late show, but i don’t think it got a First run here,HEY,TIGER WOODS is coming to TOWN.The media here is going nuts with news people from all over wanting a place to set up cameras.the AUGUSTA NATIONAL don’t play that game. I know you both HATE golf.
Tlsloews, boy you are adding Theatres up like crazy. I think for awhile I might have been ahead of you,but now you have shot pass me,which is good,I would rather read a theatre managers writings than someone that never popped a trashbag full of popcorn.
This place was really a nice little theatre you walked downstairs like a big basement.Seated about 100 or less.Saw 2 Bruce Lee films there when the named was changed to Cinema 1. As the Art theatre it was surrounded by strip clubs until the city cleaned up lower Broad Street.
I have a KNOXVILLE paper,Sept.24.1967 that has THE CAREFREE DRIVE-in On HIGHWAY 61,not 62 as Mr.Brown has stated. They were playing in case Mr.Brown wants to know “DON’T MAKE WAVES” Tony Curtis,Admission $1.00.Now Wednesday.
Coming next was"FASTEST GUITAR ALIVE" and “YOUR CHEATING HEART”
After that for Saturday night was “GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH” and"EVERYDAY IS A HOLIDAY".
Sept. 24 1967 it is a Sunday and the CINEMA DRIVE-In is playing “REDLINE 7000” and David Janssen in"WARNING SHOT" The next movies were “THE WAR WAGON” and “FLUFFY” what strange double feature.
I was at Augusta College when they booked “Tango” in the film series. The professor said there was two versions and the college was getting the"R",but when the CAPRI THEATRE downtown was raided they decided to pull it. I never did see it. Brando nude? not me. I bet “MIDNIGHT COWBOY” could get by with a PG-13 today. You know it was"X".

Thanks Chuck 1231.Enjoyed the history, wish more folks in that city would get on CT with stories.
GaryC. you got jerks in smaller cities too,one reason i never go to a film unless its 007 or Clint Eastwood and Uncle Clint is slowing down.
This town also had the HAMPTON DRIVE-In theatre.Any info?
