Nick.seems like alot of Drive-ins become church sites or lousy shopping centers that have now fallen on hard times like the old Drive-ins they replaced.
Yeah, John it was a great theatre.wehad nothing like it in Augusta. If you are from Gastonia go to the U.S. 29 DIANE Drive -in in Gastonia. I heard a horrible murder took place there and i have been trying to confirm it.It is one of those Theatre stories I heard years ago. Was Richard Hamilton Showing movies there when you worked there he certainly was wild guy in the booth. I think John Mackey told me the theatre became a carpet outlet.
I find it hard to believe that the WILLOWDAILE was the first ever mutiplex to open in the city the size of Durham/Raliegh in 1985.That above statement about 1985 being the year the first muliplex hit that rather large area is hard to believe, but maybe this area liked single screens ,which by the way ain’t a bad thing!
You are going to have to do what Nick as done and me to,to a lesser extent and start writing up a history on your city’s Drive-ins if they aren’t already on CT.
Robin, went to the theatre chains listed on CT and saw GEORGIA THEATRES and guess what our NATIONAL HILLS THEATRE was listed as a GEORGIA THEATRE,which in all fairness it closed as a Georgia THeatre Company theatre, but man I would love to see ABC THEATRES or PLITT theatres, but that is life. Don’t mind the other Augusta theatres being listed under the Georgia Theatre banner, but NATIONAL HILLS was such a step above the entertaiment peddled at Georgia Theatres here in AUGUSTA.
I think the other theatre in town that was running local plays was called THE RITZ? I got a tour of that theatre and took some shots.I THINK IT WAS the RITZ Theatre.
Yeah, I wanted no part of the booth and glad i came around when i did.I was better on the floor than in a booth. This place Like ALL REGAL theatres Was manager operated. i don’t know how they get anyone to run that 20 plex in town. I hit the dumpster when they were closing up but found nothing worth keeping. Certainly,NO one-sheets. They gutted everything,
Robin,Cathy might outta do like Nick does see DALE MARBY Drive-in,He sat down and just wrote a great story about his theatre days. She could do that one time and not have to keep putting stories on all the time like the rest of us do. You ouuta put that Picture of DIANE on the marquee on CT,You don’t know how many times I was going to do the same thing Like: CLINT EASTWOOD and MIKE ROGERS in THE ENFORCER. I was just too Dang lazy to do it. Wish I would have done it so much now.
I took pictures of the LYRIC theatre in the late 80’s it looked like it was used for storage. There was another theatre in town that was running local plays,Took pictures there, but can’t remember the name. Also visited the old DRIVE-IN there and got some pictures.
Yeah , it’s true. I think Bill would back me up. When you talk to DIANE and CAthy tell them to at least give you their FAVORITE MOVIE THEY saw NOT PLAYED AT National Hills. You can type them up for them of Course mine is 2001. Bill’s was SUMMER of 42.
Well, you tried. Like i said i have several theatre buddies that will get together and talk old times, but won’t touch this great CINEMA TREASURES site, can not explain it.
I enjoyed my times at GCC.they worked the crap out of managers and that salary certainly never covered the long hours, but i think most of us never did it for the money.
