They just featured this theater on History Channel’s “Life Without People” series, in which Gary was a part of tonight’s show. The interior of the theater appears to be on the verge of a total shambles, and there doesn’t seem to be much left that wasn’t destroyed by time and neglect.
Is this entire town abandoned? They also showed the Gary Methodist Church which is also a substantial structure on the verge of collapse. The whole downtown appears abandoned.
Here’s a google street view of the Classic. it’s a twin to the Wyckoff theater in Ridgewood/Bushwick, although the Wyckoff is in better shape, at least on the exterior:
What’s the status of this theater? It’s listed as “open”, but I don’t believe that is the case. Also, is this the theater building seen in this street view?
What’s the latest on this building? Is it gutted?
What’s the current status of this building?
It’s nice that at least the exterior was preserved.
Great photo JF Lundy, but wow, the street looks like a bomb went off! Perhaps it was ripped up from when they were building a subway?
This is one of the few times where the current photos look better than the old ones!
I have seen a few concerts here, and it is a nice concert venue.
That is great news.
This ugly building appears to have replaced the Boro Hall. What a downgrade from the photo Lost Memory lined to…

Thanks for the links Warren. What a shame it was gutted.
Judging about Ken’s photo, I would never have guessed this was a theater at one time.
I used to love this theater when I was a teenager, and it was always well kept back then, even after it was sliced up into 4 theaters.
I am not sure if that is the same theater. It should be added if it isn’t.
Do they still use the old auditorium for a warehouse, or is the whole auditorium now used for retail? What remains?
Here’s a street view from google of the Hamilton:

What year was the Garden torn down? Was it anything after it was a theater?
This theater didn’t appear to last too long.

I think the el to the left was torn down by the late 40’s, so this is older than that.

Yes, they did a great job on this theater.
I almost went to this theater to see a movie on a rainy day when I was in New Orleans last year….but we wound up in a bar on Bourbon St instead…. :)
This building looks like it needs work from the outside.

Is the building the bank using the old theater?
It probably was 1948, I think they labeled the photo wrong. I believe that the trolleys weren’t running in 1951 anymore.
