Segask, I was at the same show. Keep in mind that “barely half-full” still amounts to 600-700 patrons at the show. Hardly anything to sneeze at.
I do agree…THX/Dolby Digital was extra crispy that night. Reminded me of the “good old days” of the 90’s when even cheeseball junk like “Independence Day” & Ahnuld’s “Eraser” sprung to life on that sound system.
In another brillant job of programming by our friends at Arclight, the day after its Best Picture Oscar Nomination was announced, they moved “Slumdog Millionaire” out of the Dome and put “Underworld – Rise Of The Lycans” in its place. BARF!
AFI Night At The Movies is sold out. I didn’t get a ticket. It’s just as well…this year’s lineup wasn’t too appealing to me. At least “West Side Story” isn’t in the Dome!
I was in Auditorium #3 (on the bottom level) on Saturday night 8/9/08 for (the VERY OVERRATED!) “Pineapple Express” in digital projection. The sound was decidedly “off” – the subwoofers had no juice, you could hardly hear anything coming from the surrounds during the “action” sequences and it wasn’t nearly as crisp as anything else I’d ever seen at Arclight. And the cherry on top of this fruitcake: midway through the movie, the film STOPPED! No sound, no picture, no nothing for about 30 seconds and then the film came back on again.
Saw it at The Bridge IMAX in LA. BEST COMIC BOOK MOVIE EVER! Most definitely ranks alongside “Star Wars”, “ET” and “Raiders” as one of the best Summer Blockbusters ever!
Heh…the “Memorable Dialogue” is all the PG lines. Understandable – as all of the TRULY MEMORABLE DIALOGUE is unprintable at this site! :o)
It was a hot summer Saturday in St. Louis during my summer vacation. I was all lined up to see “Coming To America” for the 4th time at the Esquire. It was sold out. P.O'ed, I bought a ticket to the only show that still had seats available: some movie called “Die Hard” with the dude from “Moonlighting.”
I got my popcorn. I sat down. The Fox logo came on. Argyle picks John McClaine up at the airport in the limo with Run DMC’s “Christmas In Hollis” playing – the audience laughed out loud…probably because we weren’t used to hearing a hip-hop/rap record played on a “mainstream” movie before. McClaine argues with his wifey, does the “toe schrunching” thing, in come the bad guys and the party began.
The tagline promised to blow us through the back wall of the theatre. TRUER WORDS WERE NEVER SPOKEN!
We howled with laughter & cheers upon the first utterance of “Yippie Kay Aye, MOFO!” We cringed whenever Hans Gruber spoke. We clapped when bad guys got shot. We darn near fainted when we saw those shards of glass in Bruce’s feet. We hooped and hollered when Hans bit the dust…and darn near tore out the chairs in the place when Sgt. Al Powell took out the last bad guy.
And all that fun was in 70MM.
By far, one of the greatest experiences I have ever had in a movie theatre! Every time I watch Die Hard again, I flash back to that hot Saturday afternoon!
Digital upgrades won’t change the fact that Regal theatres SUCK!
The only thing missing from that beautiful picture are side shots of the marquee (where the titles of the films showing that week were placed).
My mistake for the error…which pales by comparison to the countless other errors about St. Louis theatres made by my accuser.
;)

They fought like heck to keep this place alive. So sad to see it go.
I’m going to Chinese.
It’s his fault for buying tickets so darn late. Row Z??? Sheesh!
Somebody heard my complaint…“Slumdog Millionaire” is back in The Dome starting this Friday (1/30). WOO-HOO!!!

A bit more specific, please. I don’t live in St. Louis anymore and can’t really “research” till I back home on vacation…if my $$$ ever turns around.

Graumans Chinese is 60 feet. 65 tops.
Regal is the worst chain of them all. I’d expect the worst out of this.

Rizzo, care to explain?
Any word on “This Is Cinerama” popping up again? I’ve never seen it, believe it or not.
They’re showing “South Pacific” on 8/19. In the Dome. And it’s not an AFI sponsored event. Rizzo, are y'all finally taking our advice?

At these numbers, a 50% drop-off still equals (AN ASTRONOMICAL!) $78.15 million! We are watching history, y'all. TITANIC MUST FALL!
This will be dead in 2 MONTHS (if that!)– not 2 weeks, dude. If any movie has a shot of sinking “Titanic,” this is the one!
Saw it at The Bridge IMAX in LA. BEST COMIC BOOK MOVIE EVER! Most definitely ranks alongside “Star Wars”, “ET” and “Raiders” as one of the best Summer Blockbusters ever!
Would using ****’s be a sufficient substitute for spelling the actual curse words?

Nice decoration…TERRIBLE MOVIE!
Getting back on topic, has anyone heard of any Cinerama/70MM plans at The Dome to offset the September/October dry season at the movies?
Regal strikes again. A shame. Regal is truly the McDonalds of movie theatres. No style, no originality. Just Happy Meal McMovies in a plain brown box!
Calm down, Leon. The Seattle Cinerama DOES HAVE – and USE – CURTAINS.
AND, contrary to popular belief, the standard screen that they use to show non-Cinerama films is slightly curved as well.
