I never knew Elvis worked in a theatre.I know Kenny Rogers did he told me so when worked at GCC in Athens,Ga. I guess you saw so many country stars in Nashville you lost count.
Projectionist Bill Barkley tells this story. “We are running a matinee and this is in 1971 when Vice President Spiro Agnew is in a parade on Broad Street, when the Secert Sevice comes in the booth and out the back door on the roof, for security reasons.” That was a first.
CLIFFORD, I asked Beverly about going to the other movie .X rated! her mom would have killed me. even though we saw SAILOR WHO FELL WITH GRACE FROM THE SEA at the Imperial a pretty hard core R rated film. I am not much on musicals, but CAmelot! My Favorite Musical is OLIVER which i saw in 70mm at NATIONAL HILLS THEATRE.
Bottom of the barrel, We are getting the Gay comedy THE RITZ. in this neighborhood theatre. We can only hope it sorta goes unnoticed because this is Not a West Augusta Movie. THE RITZ plays one week and is gone. The same run we had on MAME. Both Turkeys. I thought MAME would better with the senior crowd, but they stayed away.
Even though I worked for Plitt Theatres in Augusta. We all looked up to the PHIPPS PLAZA as a number one theatre in our Southeastern Chain.I always wanted to visit it ,but never did.
Yeah, We had the WEIS CINEMA CENTRE AND WEIS DRIVE IN here in Augusta. On one side of the Twin they would run THE STORY OF O and in the other theatre they had CAMELOT. I remember because my girlfriend made me take her to see it. I worked for ABC THeatres and PLitt Theatres in Augusta. Even though sometimes they Get GODFATHER 2 first run most of the time it would off set with an X rated flick on the other side. Both are on CT.
Yeah, I thought that was an awful small lot,but i remember going through the Virginia mountains back in the early 70’s and i never saw such a small drive In located in those mountains it was tiny. My Almanac book could be wrong.
I am not really a Drive In theatre guy. just trying to help out with this Almanac i have on Drive ins in 1956. My friend Nick, In Tampa was working the Drive-ins.
No i did not work here. I found a 1956 Motion picture Almanac in the old Miller Theatre and sometimes i get it out to help with infO.However, I did work at my cousin’s drive in free of charge when i was 16 and spent a couple of weeks there. I actually made a CHANGE OVER when the Projectionists got sick and had to visit the toilet. I did not to too bad, It was HOMBRE with Paul Newman. Non-union booth in Forrest City, N.C.. I heard that Drive inhad just closed up about a year or so.
Listed in the 1956 Motion Picture Almanac The South main parked 4oo cars,so there was no change. It was owned by Interstate Theatres which also owned the Sheppard Drive-in.
We were set for a JERRY LEWIS THEATRE here in Augusta,Ga. But when Georgia Theatres heard the news they quickly built SOUTHGATE CINEMA. I wonder how often this happens,Make plans for an area then have the locals expand to keep you out of the market.

In 1956 it was owned by Lone Star Theatres.
In 1956 it was owned by J.Van Lloyd. it still parked 550 cars.
I have The Saco Drive in Parking 75 to 150 cars in 1956. It was owned at that time by Higgins Circuit. So it has expaned?

This Drive in parked 750 cars in 1956.
Listed in the 1956 Motion Picture Almanac The South main parked 4oo cars,so there was no change. It was owned by Interstate Theatres which also owned the Sheppard Drive-in.

I have a copy of the Davis Cone book, He is from Augusta,Ga. and grew up in the same movie houses he did. A great artist and book.
