I wanted to visit a Drive in in Tampa when i brought the kids down from Georgia and my friend Nick wanted us to visit a Drive in. Nick, admitted it was a gem in its day. He knows the projectionist so he had alot of great stories to tell. Like i Told Nick that was the most screwed up drive in i had seen in awhile.{there is triple drive in in Commerce,Ga. that is almost as BAD. We watched AMOVIE ON A FENCE at the FUN-LAND, AN HONEST TO GOODNESS FENCE.talk about greed.
And how the heck do you get out of there on a crowded night?
It is hard to believe and Adult theatre would switch product from X to PG,but in noticed the MODJESKA played FIVE ON THE BACKSIDE a PG movie, very rare once they went R ratings only.
Surprize of the evening my girlfriend and future wife pops in one evening unannounced.Just glad i was behaving myself with the girls at the theatre.I know she remembered REGENCY cause that is where we met.
Friday night after the midnight shows Charles and I drive out to Mike’s {our relief Projectionist} for a Athens Party. IT was theatre folks and friends. And these theatre people DRINK just like my buddies with ABC THEATRES. Charles got so wasted i had to drag him out of the car and put him to bed. A first.
Saturday morning Charles had the mother of hangovers and could not work Saturday morning. We went in at 10am everyday with GCC. SO Zacker and myself had to get the place ready. Charles dogged in that evening. We all worked til 2am .
One thing i noticed quickly when i started working was there was NO ONE SHEETS from past movies.I asked some of staff and sure enough since the place had been open the posters hang in GEORGIA dorms,COLLEGE TOWN ! I had hoped to find a few gems.
I know several times kids asked me for one sheets ; I can count on my hand how many times i was asked for posters in Augusta.
WE had a 20 amp breaker go bad in one of the service panels.I told ZACK i could change a breaker and save the company a few bucks. He call a electrican from Athens.Total waste of money.
One thing about GEORGIA SQUARE is it is so much larger than REGENCY TRIPLE. We have a nice check out room. The stock room is twice the size as REGENCY and while the popcorn room at REGENCY seem to be in a closet the one here is nice enought, the employees have a desk to study since most all of them go to UGA.
At GEORGIA SQUARE we can keep all the drink cups in the stock room.At REGENCY we had to store some in the booth and that teed DRAY off alot. I think ZACK misses Chuck Dray.
Well, our Assistant manager Charles has found a Girlfriend that means this other Assistant,ME is having to mind the store more. At 4pm Mr.Zacker is gone. She is the mall somewhere, the other day the guy bought flowers,no wonder our power bill is not getting paid.
Mr.Zacker is showing Charles how to make up an ad and made it clear he did not want me to give advice.Zack does a pretty good ad.
Bill Barkley shot quite a bit of closing night when the Cinema 3 was closing. Today, in Aiken there is no sign of a theatre. He had nice video of the booth, the films cans getting loaded up for the last time.
I do remember going by the FOX DRIVE IN as a child when my parents drove to Aiken on Whiskey Road. I remember a pretty large screen at least for a 9 year old. It was running a movie, but i can’t remember.
I did go with ZACKER to AKERS MILL in Atlanta one time or.Lets say i drove him. He never liked to drive, but i did get to see the Atlanta theatres. I think he had a meeting there. WE later visited an AMC theatre. When word came that GCC was building five more screens in the parking lot i should have stayed.Charles was more than happy inside the mall.
That GCC jacket affects girls it seemed in Athens.
Mr.Zacker was always looking for future assistants. I was surprized Karen never wanted to move up,but she seemed happy in the box office.I think Pam {can’t remember her last name] showed some interest and i think she took the spot when i left. Why, did i leave i guess i just got home sick and living in a single wide trailer i wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Funny thing about GEORGIA SQUARE CINEMAS, The projectionists MR.Smith was pretty much a man that stayed in the booth. At Regency in Augusta you could always count on seeing Chuck Dray down by CHICK-FIL-A drinking coffee which was right next to the cinemas. Both Projectionists were good to work with, but they sorta kept to themselves.
When i came up to Athens i noticed that on late shows we were hiring off duty Athens police to stay at the theatre during the midnight shows. While,in Augusta we never needed cops except for ROCKY HORROR. We never had any problems one of the cops was named Andy and he was always there every weekend.
MR,MOM played a pretty decent run at GEORGIA SQUARE and it seem to do quite well. A long run. I am a big TERRI GARR fan anyways. But the town loved horror movies. as well as comedies like MR. MOM.
We always got great seats to the Georgia Bulldog football games. I mean we were the theatre of choice when the team wanted to see a movie. They would pull up in buses and would all watch them same film. I guess because they all ended at different times.
Nick, why couldn’t this have been as GEORGIA SQUARE MALL CINEMAS 1 2 3 4. That is the real history not these GEORGIA THEATRES out in the parking lot that was a GCC theatre. A CARMIKE operation.Athens desrves better. no wonder i couldn’t find it Thanks.
With Jacqueline Bisset in the DEEP and that wet t-shirt she wore in the movie we are getting the 1971 film SECRETS and from what i was told it is earned its R rating. And i am sure of a tie in with the DEEP. COLUMBIA TWO. {SECRETS would be a rather hot film,but it did not do much box office. 2009 }
I wonder if REGAL , being so anti-union is using IA projectionists in a pro-union town.Sorta surprized this Knoxville theatre chain is this far from home. Was just wondering if the candygirls are running the films?
Thanks Nick. The Mark 1 I am pretty sure was not owned by the same outfit that ran the CINEMA.For one thing, their ads were always separate. But both theatres were in easy walking distances.
THanks Nick, If we could get Bill to give us some info, much more than i had we could do a pretty good history on this theatre. I know he was there the last night it was open. You need to drop him aline. He knows so much about the Aiken ,S.C, theatres.

BIRD ON A WIRE is playing with GOLDIE HAWN and MEL GIBSON.
EDITHA, I have enjoyed reading about your theatres in England.
Surprize of the evening my girlfriend and future wife pops in one evening unannounced.Just glad i was behaving myself with the girls at the theatre.I know she remembered REGENCY cause that is where we met.
I wish this site said GEORGIA SQUARE CINEMAS 1.2.3.4 instead of value cinemas it looses it historical value.

THANKS NICK. Like i said Bill has so much Aiken Theatre history.
