As you see on my COLUMBIA 1 and 2 postings we seem to play at older movies even in the late 70’s. I remember PETER SELLERS in THE PARTY it played at COLUMBIA ONE. I think a week at most. Filler?
COLUMBIA TWO played HEROES first run ; an ABC THEATRE. I noticed on the end credits on HEROES the song CARRY ON WAYARD SON by KANSAS was in the film version because i heard it everynight walking down to check the exits. I could swear i saw HEROES on tv only it had a different music ending .like classical or something.
Before i worked at NATIONAL HILLS and had to buy a ticket i saw THE MAN THAT LOVED CAT DANCING and with a title like that no one would believe it was a pretty good western.I also saw SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE there and it too was a good movie.I had always wanted to get FIVE on a late show,but we never did. At least i don’t have it written down.
NOV. 17 1974 WEIS DRIVE IN is spending a few bucks on a nice size ad for THREE THE HARD WAY with Jim Brown and SUPERFLY T.N.T.
Of course THREE THE HARD WAY play at 6:30 and 10:30. with T.N.T. playing at 8:20. FREE IN CAR HEATERS. WEIS DRIVE IN ads are always larger than the HILLTOP and SKYVIEW.
FEB. 26 1975
Now showing on a cold wednesday night at the HILLTOP DRIVE IN is BAMBOO GODS AND IRON MEN. second feature is SUPERSTOOGES VS. THE WONDERWOMEN. both rated R. Starts at dusk.
NOW PLAYING as it read on the marquee in bright red letters
JUGGERNAUNT and second feature HARRY IN YOUR POCKET both rated PG . Starts at 6;30 pm. Juggernaunt opened at the MILLER theatre, while HARRY opened at SOUTHGATE,{i saw it at Southgate}
Well, we got it what Mr.Tinney really didn’t want a film about a GAY killer or a killer of GAYS and can you believe it AL PACINO is the star. CRUISING is not a Columbia County movie or for that fact an Augusta movie. IT has special warning about the subject matter discretion is urged for younger audiences.
I have seen parents bring kids to R rated ,but what kind of parent would bring a child to this? {2009- it did do okay, but not a long run}.
COLUMBIA TWO we have LOGAN’S RUN. Picked it up from MASTERS 4. I guess one day i will get over us getting their films. Doesn’t seem to bother anyone else. I am not impressed with this flick.
Like i said earlier i can not believe a major chain doing such a thing. Yeah, Drive-ins would break in on the sound during the second feature to announce the food stand was closing. Never heard of such a thing. Has anyone else?
In 1973 PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID does great business. HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER also played there, but it was BONNIE and CLYDE that really sold tickets.The Projectionist,Bill Barkley said when he first saw this film it like something he had never seen before with all the films he had played. He was so impressed he put together a book covering this epic film. To Bill, politics once again in the OSCARS kept BONNIE and CLYDE from Best Picture.
Bill told me IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT was nowhere in league with BEATTY and DUNAWAY.
1974 I was happy Mr.Mackey booked A MAN CALLED HORSE for a late show he asks me often about what to play on our late shows.So far i am batting close to 100% Chewy doesn’t care and he should take more interest since he is the head doorman.
I just dropped by and caught TAXI DRIVER playing {IMPERIAL} I have heard alot of people upset with the violence. I thought DEATH WISH was violent,but this is rough.And the lanuage.I think this movie must have came close to getting an X rating. I don’t think this could play at my place.{COLUMBIA 1 and 2}.
I knew several managers that would resale tickets not to mention how many doormen and box office girls would do the same thing. 99% of the time they don’t want the stub anyways.
COLUMBIA ONE we open to pretty good crowds with CAPRICORN ONE. It was about a fake landing on Mars. I enjoy sitting down in slow periods and watching it. { years later i met HAL HOLBROOK a co star in the movie and asked him about it.He could not remember what i was asking about.Goes to show you. For an actor it is hit your mark and say your lines. The fans expect so much it seems.}

WHITE LIGHTING plays here i it saw with my best friend PERRY DUGGAR. His mom a fine southern church going lady took Perry,his sister and older brother to DANIEL VILLAGE to see the movie PAINT YOUR WAGON. She thought the GP RATING was for kids. I ended up explaining to her that GP is not for kids. I bet was 12 at the time.Some things you never forget.
DEATHRACE 2000 has kicked butt.It is a ROGER CORMAN film and these West Augusta moviegoers are eating it up. It just seems like it outta be at WEIS CINEMAS.

Yes,the theatre took three rows at least off the back house right side for sound and video production.

Bill, I left a comment on the 200 highest grossing theatres.A little insight from the theatre business.
I knew several managers that would resale tickets not to mention how many doormen and box office girls would do the same thing. 99% of the time they don’t want the stub anyways.

I made a mistake I was fired Nov.9 1980. Glad i kept a journal.
Hey, at least i loved the business enought to jot down the 1970’s.
