Sadly,I wonder if de-segragation had anything to do with this closing. Many small theaters closed around the South because of “issues” relating to that process. The theater owners did not think whites would sit on the same seats,
Yes,the building is in great condition, overall.Next time I have time to waste,by getting off the super slab in RR,I’ll try to get inside.I wander far and wide trying to sell industrial supplies to the willing,so I see many places.I keep a sharp eye for theater structures.I spotted this one long before it was listed.
There is only a relative handful of true masterpeices left that are “easily” savable. The UTAH in SLC comes to mind.So many have been lost in criminal manners in the past few years. One in Il and the Raymond come to mind. We,who care, must support this one.
My faith needed a location for its S.Richmond “inner city” congregation. They bought a church from a congregation. That money then enabled them to buy the Westover, which had recently closed.I pass this theater building regularly and like the fact that it still looks like a theater.
I was in LB today.A long time residemt said this theater is GONE.He also said two ther fine houses were on the same street-the ISIS and the WARNER.This gentleman’s wife is heavily involved with the Academy project.
I REALLY get around.Saw SALT there Sat night.A fairly well kept old small towm art deco joint.CHEEEPER than the city prices, for sure.Seats almost as misarable as the BYRD.
Hey,Bruce, were you working at the Uinta when Rosemary’s Baby was showing? Provo lost a whole lot when the Center St.Theaters were lost. According to Smith’s UTAH THEATERS website, there was once a large theater further West on Center, but it disappeared,I guess,in the 50’s.
Utah media reports, such as on KSL site, indicate that Ballam’s co.needs money badly,as the economy has dried up the normal deep pockets of the Utah finacial elites.Renovation on the Utah has been halted till the coffers start to fill again. How sad for Logan.By the way,the renovation will lower seating to 350.
It has been rebuilt as office space,it appears, although not much use yet.It suffered the same total neglect as the Venus in Manchester area of Richmond.
I was in RR yesterday (waste of time). The theater I refered to above is at 1012 Roanoke St.The carvings are lovely, for this town. The theater has a large stage box,the building has retail in front.Next time I’ll have to get out and go in,try to see what is left inside,theater-wise.It was a grand place at one time for sure.
GREAT NEWS-I guess. In today’s SL Trib,is the news that SLC has bought the entire complex for 5.5 or 7 mil, depending on definitions, for a “film center”.All sounds good,so far.The article also includes photos of various shots of the place now.
Walked by this hulking, massive theater today.(my wife loves trolling the cutsie shops on Caroline St.)It still looks like a theater.Been trying to get inside for years. It has a large stage house,so must have been a great place at one time.

I know there was a BRICK theater on or near the square in 1960.Maybe LM’s pic is that building?
THIS theater’s demise is a crime.

I was told today that they need additional fund raising and the economy is hitting them hard.

The only thing that appears to be happening is that the sign saying great things are coming has been “freshened”.
Somewhat similar to the Westhampton. Kept in good repair.SHOULD have remained a theater. The area needs one.
Amy,your site is great. Thanks for the tip. Can’t wait for the finished project to change the area for the coming generations.
SWEETEST lady runs this.Took 6 grand sons to see SORCERER’S APPRENTICE Fri.aft.Very good value.
I REALLY get around.Saw SALT there Sat night.A fairly well kept old small towm art deco joint.CHEEEPER than the city prices, for sure.Seats almost as misarable as the BYRD.
Article today in Richmond Times about the “delicate” finacial condition of the Byrd.Time to put money where mouth resides.
SOMEONE SHOULD LIST THE LOVELY OLD THEATER IN “DOWNTOWN”.

When was the horrible “modernizing” of this theater carried out??Destroyed the character ,for sure.

Yes,I was in Franklin last week.( I wander willy-nilly) It is NOW being used as a church, again.
It has been rebuilt as office space,it appears, although not much use yet.It suffered the same total neglect as the Venus in Manchester area of Richmond.
The huge, ugly, abandoned theater in nearby Weldon is now being used as a church.

Probably died when the USAF closed the big base there.
