In August of 2004, a section of the wall of the main entrance (Proonguey) collapes. Under inspection by the city it was found that the sign and all the working lights was pulling away from the building (which was taken down and it’s where abouts is unknown at this time) and that the building was unsafe. The City demolished the Pronnguey block stating it could not be saved. The princess portion and the main auditorium remain standing but their condition are unknown. Unfortunatly the City only designated the Prognuey block under the HERITAGE ACT because under city listings the main auditorium has a separate adress and is not protected. (what a oversight that was) The Sniderman family have applied for a permit to tear down what is left ( Princess addition and main auditorium) unless someone is willing to take over the theatre which the city cannot afford to do. The city is also planning to send the Sniderman family the bill to date as was reported in the Hamilton Spectator.
A RESENT FIRE(SEPT. 04) AT TWO HISTORIC BUILDING NEXT TO THE THEATRE CAUSE MAJOR SMOKE AND WATER DAMAGE TO THE THEATRE. THE CEILING,WALLS,SEATS AND BASICLLY THE ENTIRE THEATRE HAS TO BE CLEANED. THEY ESTIMATE IT WILL COST UPWARDS OF $1,000,000.00 TO CLEAN. I HAVE BEEN INSIDE AND THE WORK THAT WAS DONE TO RESTORE THIS THEATRE WAS FANTASTIC.. LET’S HOPE IT DOES NOT TAKE LONG TO REPAIR AND RE-OPEN IT.
I CAN RECALL IN THE LATE SEVENTIES GOING TO THE DELTA. IT WAS LOCATE BETWEEN KING/MAINWHERE THEY INTERSECTED AT THE DELTA IN THE EAST END OF THE CITY. YOU COULD ENTER THE THEATER FROM EITHER STREET. AT THAT TIME IT WAS CALLED THE $1.50 DELTA. YOU COULD GO AND SEE A DOUBLE B- MOVIE FEATURE FOR THAT PRICE. I CAN ALSO REMEMBER GOING TO SEE ROCK BANDS PERFORM THERE ALSO. THE BUILDING STILL STANDS TODAY BUT IT HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO APARTMENTS. MARK
YOU ARE CORRECT. THERE WERE/ARE PLANS TO CONVERT THE THEATER BUT IT HAS NOT HAPPENED YET. HAPPENED. MANY YEARS AGO, SOMEONE EVEN HAD A IDEA OF CONVERTING IT INTO A MUSIC HALL BUT THE COST AND THE INTEREST WAS NOT THERE. LIKE MANY OF HAMILTON’S OLD THEATERS THAT HAD STAGES IN THEIR EARLIER YEARS IT LOOKS AS IT’S FATE MIGHT BE THE SAME AS THE CAPITAL AND PALACE. MAKING ANOTHER PARKING LOT.
THE CENTURY HAD A BALCONY WHICH WAS HIDDEN BY A FALSE CEILING WHICH WAS PUT IN WHEN IT WAS CONVERTED TO A MOVIE HOUSE. IT DOES STILL STAND BUT I HAVE HEARD THAT PART OF THE ROOF HAS FALLEN IN SO THE CONDITION INSIDE IS UNKNOWN.

There is a good article on the theatre in the Hamilton Spectator’s Saturday September 25th paper by MARY K. Noylan.
