Please don’t tell me that ANYBODY is going to be annoyed if it turns out that The Gallo showed films at one time and ends up getting a listing here! I believe that falls under the “get a life” heading!

Isn’t it getting a little obnoxious to continually refer to forty second street as “the deuce”? I mean, I like noir as much as the next guy, but Bogie’s been dead for 50 years.

I saw productions of My Fair Lady, and Oliver! here in the early to mid 60’s. Myrna Loy starred here in a production of Barefoot in the Park, Betsy Palmer in The King and I. It was quite a place in it’s day.

I was talking to someone today who lives right near this theater. He says he can’t imagine how it still stays open, as it is almost always dead inside, practically nobody there. Hope the old Jewel doesn’t meet the old bulldozer soon!

well, you can thank the homophobia and hate mongering of some (oh alright, ONE) of the members here, whose meddling troublemaking is forcing those interested in these theaters to move to other sites.

well, I went to the Fair today, and it is back to normal. They just had to install metal doors at the entrances to the adult sections, as per the fire dept. By the way, I had a great time, the place was hopping!

I just called the Fair, and the guy who answered assured me that the theater would be back to normal (a relative term I know!) by next Tuesday.

anyone know what’s happening at the Fair theatre in Queens? Went there two days ago and was told the back section with the booths was “closed for renovations” until this Tuesday. A customer outside the theatre told me the inspectors were there on Monday and did not look happy. Could this be a death knell?

exactly, that’s why I felt I had to comment on such rudeness.

I’d like to comment on the remark above concerning “predators” at the Fair. Get the hell over your narrow minded self. I’m sure you’re very well informed about the history of all these old theaters and you have posted some fascinating pictures. But you insist on making judgmental remarks about the people who patronize the Fair. Why? What do you know about it? Have you visited recently? If not, shut up! I am a 49 year old intelligent, professional man who goes to the Fair about twice a month. For the most part, everyone I’ve encountered there has been very nice, just looking for some discreet fun. Nary a predator in sight; so you are sadly misinformed. If you don’t agree with these mens' lifestyles or choices, that’s your right. But please don’t sermonize and spew your prejudice in here where it doesn’t belong, especially since you have no idea whereof you speak.

I’ve personally never been there, but from what I’ve heard, it’s the same as the fair.

two people can go into a booth. You’re not allowed to do anything in the public areas. And yes, the theater is geared toward gay men.

I’m a white male who has lived in Jackson Heights for the past 20 years. My mother who owned a condo in Sarasota Fl, recently sold it and bought a condo here on a 88th and 35th ave., one of many beautiful blocks with apartment buildings dating back to the 1920’s. She much prefers it here as Florida was way too boring for her. I’ve been laughing my head off for two decades now, at people who don’t live here, but insist what a “bad” neighborhood it is. Why? Because it’s a mixed race neighborhood? I don’t know about posh, but the block of 80th street between 37th and 35th ave. was recently picked by New York Magazine as one of the 50 best blocks in NYC. Also many houses here are selling for a million apiece. So please, don’t knock the neighborhood. I’ve never had a problem here, love the people, and intend to stay here.

My mother, who will be 80 in November, remembers seeing Frankenstein and Flying Down to Rio here(not together!) when they first came out.

I just don’t get people who don’t go to foreign films because they “can’t handle ” the subtitles. If you would just try it you would see that after the first few minutes, you don’t even realize you’re reading anymore. My favorite film this year is La Vie En Rose, which is in French with English subtitles. I guess I’m completely floored because I’ve been going to see so many great films for more than 30 years which are in foreign languages. Bergman, Fellini, Kurasawa; God, I can’t imagine missing these great films because I stubbornly refuse to make a slight effort and read subtitles(which by the way are far preferable to dubbing). I also happen to live in Jackson Heights, just a few blocks from The Jackson. Just as reading subtitles doesn’t bother me, NOT reading them doesn’t bother me either!

Does anyone remember the older married couple that ran this theatre in the 70’s? The wife was always a little rude, barking at customers to “step lively!”. Also she did the recordings on the phone schedule, and my friend and I used to call just tho hear her butcher certain actors names, like Yvette Mimieux, where she pronounced the x. We would laugh our heads off, of course we were only 14

I go to the Fair about twice a month. I used to think that the younger guys that go there were hustlers, but it turns out most of them have father(or in some cases grandfather)fixations. As a 48 year old man, I always manage to score a hottie. That alone makes it worth the 15 bucks. I mean come on, in a bar you’d pay that for two drinks, and probably would just get attitude!
