It’s still there. I took a batch of photos in August 2007, which are posted above. The building was for sale last September, per the preceding comment. Right now the building is unused.
Right. I could say nothing, or I could make a qualified statement and then hopefully get some corroboration. I wouldn’t have said “Please change the architect to Albert C. Martin”. I thought it was enough to raise the question and then go from there.
I drove by the dome a few days ago, for the first time since they built all the retail around it. Quite a difference heading down Sunset from the west. When the dome was surrounded by parking lots, the first glimpse was striking. Now you have to wait until the middle of the block to see the theater. Too bad.
That’s impressive. My only question is why the theater is numbered 23,401? 20,000 is the Odeon Sketty. Just wondering if that’s due to entries being added and then deleted.
I don’t think the caption is correct, as the Banner was a few doors south. It’s possible that the Banner was an early name for the Regent, but I haven’t seen any evidence to that effect.
Wasn’t the Ritz the last name before it was a Pussycat? I looked for Ritz initially and then had to search under previous names. Perhaps this should be changed. Anyway, here is a photo I took yesterday. The sun washed out the circular sign at the top, but I could see where the church scrubbed off the Pussycat logo: http://tinyurl.com/2bnnws
OK, there’s some contradiction there between my two comments, but I think the 1973 building is in fact the Central theater location. I can’t explain the 1960 photo.
The Speedway is now the site of the Beverly Wilshire hotel.

I’m no expert, but that doesn’t look like a 1905 building to me, unless it was completely done over in the twenties.
I did say “it appears”. Not citing as the gospel truth.
Further research shows the location of former this drive-in as 10200 Cullen Boulevard, Houston 77051.

I went to that show. It was a blast.
It appears that the architect was Albert C. Martin.
Perhaps it was on the other side of Broadway. I know there was a caption originally, but I would have to dig through the site to find it.
I thought that ad looked familiar.
If it means changing all the downtown theaters to Teatro, I reverse my earlier recommendation and vote no.
Can’t explain. Maybe it’s just a Pussycat thing.
You would think so, except none of the Pussycats are titled that way. I guess the thought was that twenty Pussycats would be too hard to sort through.
Here are two photos taken yesterday while inching my way down Ventura Boulevard at rush hour:

Are you pro or con, Joe?

For some of the “classic” theaters, people get huffy if changes are proposed absent concrete evidence. Hence the solicitation for objections.
OK, Joe, I’ll buy that. The theater was around in 1955, but gone by 1960, apparently.
OK, thanks.

This 1973 photo shows the theater building, sans theater:

The Central can be seen to the north of the Cozy in this 1955 photo:
