NewOwnerGary: I wish you well and will keep you and your crew in my prayers as I’m sure you do have an enormous task ahead, but it will all be worth while once the doors reopen. The Rogers has set far too long deserted and dark so it finally deserves this special TLC attention.
…….“one of the last old-style theaters in North Carolina that hasn’t been chopped into smaller theaters.” This is music to my ears! There is a book entitled Our Vanishing Americana by Mike Lassiter of Davidson NC that features many things such as single screen theatres, drug stores with soda fountains, hot dog stands and general stores.
Interesting to read of the new multi-screen cinemas being built next to the original art deco Mimosa. I’ve learned that the Mimosa sits dark, today except for a restaurant in the lobby area, only. Would love to see interior photos and read personal memories of seeing movies at the Mimosa.
A Year in Revue….A Strand Theatre Spectacular January 8-10..visit the website for more details! www.earlsmithstrand.org
The Strand is also home to Atlanta’s Lyric Theatre with great live productions in 2010 such as Cinderella, The All Night Stut, Little Shop of Horrors, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Hairspray!
I truly hope that the renovating efforts for this theatre returns it to the orignal single screen concept. Present and past photos of the theatre and its art deco interior can be found at the site below:
Below is Elaine Savoldi’s reply to me in regards to the Granada Theatre. Elaine is based in Beaver Falls PA which is about 20 minutes from Beaver PA where the Granada was located.
Dear Patsy,
I am also saddened by the scheduled and certain demise of the Granada Theatre. I had the property listed for a time and that is why I put the information on Cinema Treasures, in the hopes that someone who would be able/willing to restore the theatre would discover it. I went so far as to send packets of information on the theatre with someone who attended a theatre convention in Las Vegas.
What also hurts is that my company, Town Center Associates, is heavily involved in downtown revitalization. Indeed, the Granada was on the waiting list to be put on the National Register of Historic Places, but none of the owners, nor the community, stepped forward to make sure that this very rare atmospheric theatre would be preserved. Restoring a theatre is an effort that needs community support.
I am not sure how I can help you because the process has already been started and I doubt can be reversed. Perhaps you could seek out other theatres in the country that still have a chance at being saved, and place your efforts there.
Photobucket doesn’t work so can anyone provide a photo(s)?

And a great site with artist rendering of how it will look!
Good news then!
longislandmovies: I believe the demise of this theatre came down to….location, location, location.
If the drive-in stays open, her dream will be kept alive.
RIP Ms. Lawing…you left many great drive-in memories with many residents, I’m sure.

Life’s too short: Yesn and long time no see on CT!
Sorry to learn that this Princess in Nashville and one in Memphis were demolished yet the Princess in Harriman is being restored by a local actor!
The stone facade on this theatre is truly amazing and very unique!
I can’t believe that a theatre in, of all places, Gatlinburg TN is not open as this mountain community is a major tourist area!
tisloews: I was told that it is a community west of KNOXVILLE. And when you find the town and the theatre do report back! Thanks!
