Saw “Cloverfield” here on Sunday 1/20/08. They DID close the curtains after that annoying Screenvision preshow. So it looks like somebody got our messages about the lack of proper showmanship here.
Saw “Cloverfield” here on opening night 1/18/08. No, they didn’t close the curtains before the show but, Yes, they cranked up the sound system an extra few notches to get us psyched for the flick. It worked! Felt like the good old days!
More theatres across the country need to get in the act of showing classics on the big screen where they belong. I’m pretty sure the filmmakers didn’t have Hi-Def & Blu Ray in mind when they made “Casablanca” and “Citzen Kane”!
Rizzo: Is there any way for us who are Cinema Treasures regulars who will be attending “2001” to meet you before the show so we can touch bases and whatnot? I’ll be there with 15 other members of my movie club(s) and we’ll be having dinner at the Arclight Cafe at 6:30 PM.
One reason why I’ve never witnessed the distortion for myself: in almost 17 years of being a Dome customer, I have managed to always sit in the center section…never on the far left/right sections. Everything looks alright to me from a center POV.
Another question, Rizzo: any chance your bosses will browse this thread since a few folks seem to have an idea on how to fix the distortion issues?
Arclight just launched their own message board as part of their site. I wonder what would happen if all of us registered on it and made enough of a ruckus about how they’re mismanaging the programming at the Dome. Do you’d think they’d listen?
As far as “Sweeney Todd” showing at the Dome right now, I have no beef with that. I’ve seen it twice (BEFORE it was released) and I can declare that it’s Dome-worthy. The only thing missing is the fact that Tim Burton shot it in 1:85 instead of 2:40.
Speaking of which, do films shot in 1:85 have the same distortion issues?
I call this place “Arclight Lite”. Super cramped lobby that desperately tries to duplicate Arclight Hollywood’s lobby – using half the space! Good sounds, good screen, seats ain’t broken in yet – one of my film club members complained about the seats when we saw “Juno”. And the poor guy who did the pre-show introduction was struggling to “remember his lines.”
At least it ain’t $14.00 on a Friday night like it’s big brother.
I call Sherman Oaks “Arclight Lite.” It’s literally a smaller version of Arclight Hollywood – but they went too far trying to replicate Arclight Hollywood’s lobby at the Sherman Oaks location. “Cramped” is an UNDERSTATEMENT!
Too bad Arclight/Pacific was one of the only ones who figured out how to build a shiny new complex while preserving the original flagship auditorium. There’d be a lot more Dimension 150 & Cinerama auditoriums alive and kicking nowadays.
Call me crazy, but I’m willing to give Arclight a pass if they can’t get a good 70MM print. Just as long as they boot “Cloverfield” or “Rambo” out of the Dome if only for 1 night so they can show 2001 in there.
All they gotta do is convert a few more theatres into digital projection and that’ll take care of those “uncertainties.” No need to sell their legacy to a company like Regal who couldn’t care less about such a thing!
Why am I not surprised? Summer Redstone is an old fart who’s played a significant role in destroying movie theatres over the past 30 years or so. Fight on, Shari!
P.S. I LOVE The Bridge in Los Angeles. My top choice to see a film on a Sunday afternoon.
As a counterpoint to Senorsock’s comments, the curtains were lowered AT THE END OF ANOTHER FRIGGIN DIGITAL MOVIE TRIVIA/TV COMMERCIAL PRESHOW ala “Regal/AMC First Look.” Mann’s preshow is run by Screenvision and, yes, the curtains are left wide open as folks buy their popcorn and take their seats after arrival. Once the preshow’s done, THEN THEY CLOSE THE CURTAINS! BOO-HISS!!!
Dang…no one cares about classic presentation anymore (except Arclight – save the trivia barrage at AFI’s 40th).

I first went to this joint during the 2007 Holiday season. I must say, I do love this place! American Cinematheque’s doing a helluva job with it!

Damn.

Let us know.
And they say the drive-in is dead, huh?
Glad I’ve got my Wehrenberg history book and their legendary jingle online. Whoever buys them up will cast those items into the dungheap of history!
I’VE GOT MINE!!!! WOOO-HOOOO!!!
Thanks, Rizzo…I think.

HELL YEAH!!!
And, by the way, the headline is wrong. It’s not Shari that’s criticizing cinemas. It’s her old fart papa Summer.

This. Is. One. Overrated. Movie Theatre!!! I avoid the place as much as possible.
Found about this too late. Next time, do an email blast to all your members.
Anyone who’s ever set foot in The Landmark knows that Mark Cuban doesn’t know jack sprat about movie theatres!
