That is good news for the Theatre District. The Wilbur went dark because LiveNation (Broadway in Boston) pulled out of it a year or two ago.
Do you know if either the Wilbur or the Shubert ever showed movies? They are not listed at CinemaTreasures because nobody has yet found evidence that they did.
Even if you weren’t able to prevent it, it might still be worth pursuing. If the city fined the church for doing this, it would deter other owners of historic buildings from doing similar things.
Looks like the Strand is reopening tomorrow. Here’s a City of Boston press release advertising “Praise & Glory at the Strand,†a free concert tomorrow night featuring the Millennium Gospel Choir.
According to the press release, this concert “launches the Strand Spotlight Series, a new initiative that will usher in a new era of programming at the Strand, which has just undergone a $6 million renovation.”
The theatre has also been refit for movies, as they are starting a film series with Casablanca on May 31.
This address, 585 Cambridge St., doesn’t seem to exist anymore. A Google Street View pointed at this address shows me the small two-story Filharmonica Santo Antionio Cultural Center (575 Cambridge St), next to a large three-story building containing Fucillio/Sasso Insurance (599 Cambridge St).
Whether either of these buildings formerly contained the Lechmere Theatre, I don’t know. Can you tell by comparing the street view with the photo you have?
My apologies. I did not intend to be a ‘circling vulture’ in any way. Just trying to get some idea what the next chapter of this theatre’s history is likely to be.
I think the owners of CinemaTreasures should remove all comments on this page from “Apr 22, 2008 at 1:44pm” forward, as they are irrelevant to the Drexel. Also, it doesn’t matter who owns a Flickr scrapbook, only that the scrapbook is public.
Opposite Eliot, maybe? Streets in this area have been moved around a lot in the last few decades, but I think there used to be an Eliot Street.
What was the address of this theatre? What information did you use to add this entry here?
The marquee says MARTIN SCORSESE’S SHINE A [something hidden]. Does this mean that the theatre still shows movies occasionally?
Is Christian Free Drive-in still operating? Someone should add it to CinemaTreasures.

Thanks. Do we need to revise the description that I wrote here six years ago?
Is Studio 35 now a first-run theatre? I see Indiana Jones on that marquee.

Did they violate any local historic preservation ordinance by doing this?
Fortunately, there would be no market for that many screens on this tiny island.

Shouldn’t the name of this theatre be changed here at CinemaTreasures?
How far along is the demolition? Guess it’s time to change the Status of this one.
A movie for unintelligent people? This is news?
The MOBA opening is tonight at 7 pm.
The Kingman was a different drive-in, further north.
After Miles, I believe Chakeres took it over.
Miles East Main later became Chakeres East Main, I believe.
The former entrance to this theatre is now a sandwich restaurant called The Carving Station.

Can you link to the obit, or is it only in the paper edition? How old is Yvonne?
Does he have children? Who does the ownership of the theatre revert to now?
This is not a Showcase theatre, it is Regal.
