I missed out on this one the other day. We drove from San Luis Obispo to LA on Highway 1. I caught the Royal in Guadalupe, but I saw the left turn sign for Orcutt, too late, just before we did a stretch on the 135. I had a hunch that there was an old theater in Orcutt. Maybe next time.
L, I feel your pain. I once typed in a lengthy comment using my wife’s Blackberry, which has tiny keys not suited for my large fingers. After all that, I forgot that I had to log in first and my comment was lost forever.
I spent a lot of time in Westwood in the early and mid 80s, which was kind of its heyday, at least in my era. It was packed to the gills with students and non-students having a good time. There was a shooting in 1988 which put the brakes on the crowds, and then after the SM promenade opened it was downhill all the way. I’ve probably been to Westwood Village once since 1990 or so.
Is this on Admiral Wilson boulevard? My Jersey geography is a little rusty now, although I used to take the NJ Transit bus from AC to Philly all the time. That went down 73, I think.
Isn’t there some county office where all that stuff is on file? Dept of buildings and planning, or something like that. I assume that’s all public record once the plans are filed. You might want to start there.
A.G. Meister & Sons Carriage Factory currently occupies 910-914 Ninth Street. I haven’t come up with any pictures of the business, however. They may have taken over the theater building.
How funny that they only changed one letter to save money. In LA, the downtown Warners theater became Warren’s for a while, but that would have meant replacing no letters, just reversing the last syllable.

Blade Runner final cut is playing there now, if any one is interested. I liked the film but I never had the fascination that others seem to have.
The competition has a few photos of the Ritz as well.

In 1970 the State was part of H&H Theaters, H.J. Hodge Jr, accountant-partner, per the IMPA of that year.
“Atco Racing! Atco Atco Atco! Sunday Sunday Sunday! Be there be there be there!” Anyone remember this hyperactive radio ad from the seventies?
That’s interesting. I was wondering what the demand for carriages was in 2007. I’d be curious to see a photo of the building.
Here is a flyer from October 1987 advertising a well-known band:

I think the photographer hit the zoom button a few too many times.
Very thorough job. Thanks.
I would say that the marquee is art deco. I don’t know about the rest of it. The building may still be standing.
That’s a pretty good bet that it’s the same theater. Status should be closed but not demolished. Thanks.
This was listed as the Airline Drive-In in the 1963 IMPA. Operator at the time was Leon Asper. Capacity was 520 cars.
This is 3020 University, but I believe it’s the former theater:
