With all the folks who post on this theatre, you would think that someone would step up and do something to save it.Or maybe its a lot of talk about nothing.Good luck on any effort to save this historic theatre.
Drove by yesterday and the signboards have been removed from the marques’s and replaced by plywood and painted to match the building.At least the keep the complex looking good.
My wife drove by this theatre the other night and even though it has been closed since 1991 the lights were on on the marquee and tower although several of the letters where not working.They must be trying to bring attention to the new development.
Thanks Mike, My Grandmother had a brick from the building she bought after it was torn down after the fire,she attended the “World Primier” of Gone with the Wind in 1939,ture story,wish I knew what happened to it.
The architects of this theatre also designed the Bellemeade, the sister theatre of the Melrose,they also designed these other Nashville theatres,Belmont,Tennessee,Woodland,and the Capir in Shelbyville,Tennessee which is still in operation.
This theatre is listed with 1000 seats which was correct when it was new, 200 in the balcony and 800 on the main floor,although in my days there were about 15 to 20 seats that had been removed I guess because there where broke an could not be repaired. I always wondered why they did not take some seats out of the balcony and put them on the main floor as the balcony was only open during peak business.The landlord or Loews did not want to spend the money to do this.I wonder if any seats are still in the building I have been by there several times to ask what the condition of the inside is like now but the place is always locked up tight.The outside still looks the same except they have repainted it several times.
When the Grammys were broadcast from this theatre in 1973 the music was performed in the basement of the Church next door and piped into the theatre, I went there to try and get an autograph from Ringo Starr who was on the show, I did not get the autograph but did get to see him from some distance.Too bad all the downtown theatres are long gone.

The Alhambra operated from 1909 til 1927.
Also in the 1955 photo the theatre was right across 5th Ave,from Allens Store which is still in operation 55 years later.
Walgreens uses the old stage entrance at Arcade Alley for deliveries into the drugstore.
