DLP hasn’t released the specs for it’s IMAX Digital system, but it would have to exceed 4K at least. Early talks involved Sony and their LCoS systems, two in fact to increase the resolution up to 8K – how DLP accomplishes this, I have no idea.
technical question – how were 35mm prints actually blown up for their 70mm incarnations? Is it somewhat akin to the new trend of films being DMR’d to IMAX/70mm? Is the intermediate negative sourced? I know that for the recent engagments of ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Jumper’ on DC’s Uptown’s curved screens, the image wasn’t distorted, it was the near decolorization of the 35mm prints that were the issue.
I know it’s more than a year off, but I hope Ron Fricke’s sequel to Baraka – Samsara can play (premier?) at the AFI Silver as part of the annual DC Environmental Film Festival in all it’s 70mm goodness – I was watching portions of Baraka the other night upconverted to 1080p, this is one title I’d love to see released on blu-ray.
unfortunate really, since I wanted to see ‘Iron Man’ again, but in DLP – the 35mm print I saw was attrocious, but almost all the Regal DLP screens in the DC area are changing over to ‘Prince Caspian’ this weekend.
as for Indy 4 – DLP’s website does now denote the film being digitally released – so much for the rumour that Lucas/Spielberg were releasing this 35mm only.
those scenes shot for ‘The Dark Knight’ were shot with IMAX (70mm horizontal) cameras/film stock.
yes, Ron Fricke’s next film ‘Samsara’ is/has been shot in 70mm, and according to imdb, will get released in 70mm (2.20 aspect ratio), 35mm and digital projection (2.35).
I saw the PDF up on the Cannes website and they make no mention of the rumoured 70mm premier there [insert sad face]
In regards to the Castro Theatre 70mm film festival depending on the film’s you might see me there as well :) Any excuse to go to San Francisco is a good excuse.
do you believe AMC would have enough pull to make studios restart the trend? Are we talking about true 65mm shot productions or would 70mm blowups also work?
don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen stellar 35mm prints at the Uptown, DREAMGIRLS and V FOR VENDETTA near the end of their runs and they were very impressive, here though, the print looked like it was run through with coffee. I can’t believe Disney would go through the whole process of installing a DP system only for the premier of ‘The Guardian’ and then just UN-install it, if it can be done, why do it for a one off premier, NEC systems tout they can install DLP systems on large screens (up to 100 feet) well…. come on AMC. I think I was jaded by the recent 70mm run of ‘2001’ at the Silver which while not perfect still WAS an event.
I have to admit, I wasn’t pleased with the print the Uptown got for IRON MAN, it seemed washed out. The sound was fantastic, but for a first swipe of it’s run (Friday: 1pm showing) it seemed devoid of color and brightness and the cigarette burns were really apparent and distracting – why are they so large? For the studios opting to go digital thus elimanating imperfections like these: cigarette bursn, the white lines that randomly pop up, theatre ‘red dot’ indicators, all seem just to be added, to mar the perfect ‘film’ experience. It’s sad when three screenings at the Avalon as part of Filmfest DC, trump the projection at the Uptown.

can anyone else confirm this reverse decision from Paramount?
there’s a crying room ? I thought the Senator enforced a “no one under 5 years old admission”. I should go back at some point in the Summer, I saw “Immortal Beloved” in glorious Sony Dynamic Digital Sound – and it was an extremely impressive presentation.
but even the independent’s seem to have problems with the prints they get – Landmark E Street I’ve seen four movies there so far this year, where the 35mm prints are hideous looking, not to mention ‘There Will Be Blood’ being flipped upside down at one point, with a reel change – those are the times, when you know DP wouldn’t have problems like these.
I asked while I was there last Friday regarding ‘Blade Runner’ and the projectionist said it will be 35mm not DLP (which the main auditorium incidently does have)
a mini 70mm Film Fest is happening in August showing: BARAKA, VERTIGO, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and 2001.
wonder what tix prices will be like?

no that’s just excessive.

that would make sense Robert P. – I’m just glad to finally see that AMC installed a DLP unit at Mazza Galleria – a hop and a jump from my home.
yeah more movies should be shot in 2.55:1, bring back Cinemascope!
from what I’ve seen it’s too large to move.

what totally off the wall films for the 70mm Fest – oh it’s more enticing now.
have the film’s for July’s 70mm film fest been announced yet?

wait I’m confused did Paramount change their minds and are releasing Indy 4 in DLP.
nevermind I should always remember to read the top intro of the theatre at the top of the webpage- there’s a “soundproof nursey” – ohhhh (my bad)
