There was an ad in the August 15, 1968 edition of the Gilmer Mirror congratulating the Cargill Theater as “One of Texas Newest and Finest”. However, in May 1968 there was mention of a rededication ceremony at the Cargill, so perhaps it opened, closed and then reopened again in the sixties.
Couch Shoe Store, Inc. will have a formal opening around January 15, A. D. Couch, owner, announced Monday. The store is located on the southwest corner of the Plaza in the building which formerly housed the Rex Theater. The new store will be a family shoe store and will be an outlet of the International Shoe Corporation.

Four movies for $15. Can’t beat that.
I agree, I wasn’t disputing that. I was curious to see if the building was in fact still standing, but it looks like it’s gone.
Those small buildings on the right of the theater are still visible in the map view, but as Joe noted the theater itself is gone.
Actually, now that I read the May article again, it says the mayor dedicated the Cargill, so I would put the opening around 5/23/68.

This won’t map correctly as the street is New Laredo, not Loredo. The contemporary aerial view doesn’t show any part of the drive-in remaining.
