Does any one know since that AMC owens River East 21 and Esquire do thay (AMC) have some plans to convert the Esquire back to the single screen like it was when it opened in order to show the AMC SELECT movies? Thank You for your time :)
The Strand DOES show up in the movie “Almost Famous” it is rather hard to see you have to stop the DVD and advance it to see it and all that is seen is the name it is found in the start of the movie when “San Diego 1969 is writen across the screen. Thank You for you time :)
This theatre is in the opening credits for “The Orginal Latin Kings Of Comey” it goes by quick but if you stop the DVD you will see that it is the Colon. Thank You for you time :)
The Orpheum was the theatre that was use to flim “the queens of comedy” tour their are some very nice shots of the theatre.
Go to special features there are some very good shots of the seating area. Thank you for your time.
The drive-in and the land next to it(1st it was a Zayer then an Ames then i think the flea market came in ) are all gone if i recall it is now the sight of a Church and daycare center for the church.
Some of my child hood memories take place at this drive-in siting in the back of a 1976 wood panneld station wagon with a bucket of chicken watchin Star Wars in the rain.
This drive-in did not have the “Tune to this station” feature you had to hang the speaker (if it worked)on to your window, once in a while the trains would go past and make so much nose you could not hear the movie. I also recall that if it was raining the whole lot became a great bid mud pit,so you had it stop and think “do i REALY want something from the snack shack?
I also recall a little area off to the side with swings and a sand box sort of a play ground, good times! Thank You for your time :)
I rember going over the bridge that connects i think 31st with Cicero Ave and seeing people sitting on the walk way with lawn chairs watching the movie on the screen that face the bridge, and if i recall right their was some kind of roadway to the bluff that over looked the screens and people would drive up and park and watch the movie for free more or less. Cuse at night when the movie`s were being viewed you could hear the speakers from the cars that paid to see the flim.
Also if i recall right the police from Chicago and from Cicero took turns moving people off of the bridge becuse as i said before that would sit on the walk way and watch the movie and the people in cars would stop and look at the people and this would cause a goucker block. But this was a very good Drive-in i rember it well good memories. :) Thank You fore you time.
Just went past Harlem Corners this afternoon writen on the marquee it gives the information for the broker who is selling it i think it is eather for sale or for lease.
I don`t know if their are plans to reopen it becuse of Chicago Ridge mall being just a short distant away.
The Channel 7 ABC reported that the Chicago is getting a new smaller stage under the theatre and it will be called something like Chicago Theatre Downstairs set to open in September the 1st show i think will be eather “Sheer Madness” or “HairSpray”.
Thank You for Your Time :)
Just receved news about the Biograph the marquee(as seen in picture in description) is being removed and the theatre is to be renamed something like Victory Gardens At the Biograph. A new marquee is to be installed work crews were out their to day removing it.
I saw it on WGN-TV ch9 on the 9pm news cast.
The Chicago Historical Musueium from what i understand is in talkes to buy the marquee. The Biograph is on the National Regestary of Historical Places. Just thought you might want to know that information thank you for you time :)
Also i will have to agree with you on the current marquee, i will have to look at the vertical sign closer next time i am by the Orential Thanks for you time.
Can any one tell me why the sign that runs up the side of the bulding was removed? Was this becuse of WW2 or becuse it was falling apart?
Also can any one tell me when it was removed?
If you click on the link posted above then go down to the bottom you will see pitctures from 1920? and others from 1970? showing the diferance. thank you for you time . and thank you fore the link to the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency`s HAARGIS System.:)
I offten wondered what was on that spot, a lot of people use that CTA station i think the park is dedacated to the Pritzer famley.
It would be nice to see aomething marking the face that the for mentioned theatres were on this spot.
Thank You for the information i will have it look in to the Studerbaker/Playhouse theatre.
I know that what is now the “Artest`s cafe” was whare the Studerbaker showroom was that is why the buld. is called the Sudebaker Buld.
And on the corner of Michigan/Vanburen i think that is some kind of private club. that was the sight of the 1st art instute, then they moved it to the present lo cal. Whare the Art Instute sits now was a structure theat was the setting for a Opera fest.
Witch was how the Auditorium Theatre came to be the Opera Company had no real home and a man named F.Peck came up with the idea for the theatre.
And here we are to day.
But i will check out the Studebaker/playhouse.
Thank you for your time and space.:)
Thank you for the information.
I wish you all the luck in the world and hope that you can do it.
And that more people help back the effort to save if not the physical buld. at least keep the memories alive.
Thank You.:)
I recall the sign i mean you could see this thing for what was like miles to me of corse i was a little kid at the time, but for me at least it looked like something off of the Las Vegas strip that great big red ,yellow ,green and i think blue star just inviting you to come in! good times good times goodtimes. Ad fore the shopping center it is no longer their eather the stores that i recall being on the lot were a VENTURE, then came AMES but i think with the K-MART
right their on 79th thay took the shopers, their is a NORTHWESTERN BUSNESS SCHOOL whare the stores were and i think their used to be a CUB foods all so it to is gone. But thay now have a bank and some little stores in the plaza whare the drive-in was.One thing that i can recall is that the fearther you went in the world stop and you could not hear the traffic on Harlem Ave. all you heard were the cherp of crickets and the sound of the cars rolling over the gravel in the “seating area”. Good times i will miss them:)
Well thank You for your time and for your space. :)
If you go to google`s earthlink i think it is and type in the address of the theatre (this works great if you have a faster connection like cable or DSL) but if you do this and go and zoom in you will see that it is just another empty lot i think it is being used for a storage lot for school buses or something.
Also i agree with the post above mine thank you for trying to save a nother old theatre i wish you luck and hope that you can.:)
It sits unused behind a really bad looking chain link fence with a big sign on it that reads somthing like “THIS SPACE FOR RENT/LEASE”
I mean thay could have at least cot someone to buld on it before riping it down! I am form the Brightion Park neighborhood and i lived something like 4 or 5 blks.from it some of my childhood memories are at this theatre. O well thank you for you time and space.

This Paramount Theatre is found in the movie “ALFIE” the 2004 verson it can be seen in passing at counter number 1:16:50 on the dvd.
The marquee reminds me of the marquee of the Paradise Theatre in Chicago.
The drive-in and the land next to it(1st it was a Zayer then an Ames then i think the flea market came in ) are all gone if i recall it is now the sight of a Church and daycare center for the church.

The entrance to the World Playhouse is now the entrance to the cafe that is the bulding.
