Look at larger markets and see what is working for them and adapt it to your town’s demographic. I know that many cities Landmark has theatres in do midnight showings regularly.
They did level it for retail, and made sure that in no way did it resemble the place where a theatre may have once stood. It became a very stark and airy furniture store. The roof (which was barely there anyway!) was replaced with skylights and the floor leveled and done in wood. I have a photograph of it somewhere, not on the computer unfortunately.
The lobby was expanded, marble foyer added, and mens and women’s rooms added just inside the (new) front doors. The 1963 photo shows window frames on the second floor, that is actually the wall of the projection booth. After the renovation and addition of the two adjacent storefronts a hallway to an above apartment space was added between the booth and the new marquee.
The Cove’s lobby after the renovation, and until it closed and was destroyed, was wood and mirror paneled and not that appealing. I agree, Chuck, that the original was nicer. The need for a larger concession space was likely the impetus for the “modern” expansion.
Cardiffrfc, I was unable to find the listings you are looking for. I am unsure if the records from 1983-1988 are available at all. You may try to contact the Landmark Theatres home office in Los Angeles, it’s a stretch but maybe someone there would be willing to help you.
I think that Lost Memory’s photo link is more recent than the previous ones. I was there in 2001 and the theatre had the plain, flat marquee. The photos in LM’s links from 2/6/09 and 11/14/07 are more recent than that, the theatre has had some restoration work done in the last couple years.
Ken, did you take that photo on Saturday the 31st, or right around then? I was inside on the 31st and there were many Edward Gorey drawings decorating the interior. I am assuming it was for this “Edwardian Ball”.
Joe, the cinema may have some filed away, if there’s something specific that you’re looking for you might want to try phoning them or the city office which is at the Hillcrest Cinemas.
I attended the Conservancy’s tour yesterday and was horrified to see the interior of the Arcade. It hurt to look at it. It was a feeling I felt just for the Arcade; the conditions of the other theatres on Broadway vary quite a bit but none of the others screamed “helpless” as the poor Arcade did.

One can dream, Howard……
The correct zip code for the Bijou is 48933.

I did, however, upload a couple lobby and entrance photographs to my Flickr page, inspired by this discussion: http://www.flickr.com/achangeinscenerymovies

Here is a video I took with my phone of the Cameo’s marquee lights this January:

Those are excellent, detailed photos. Great job!

I am so bummed to be missing this event! It is made worse by the fact that I just attended the Conservancy’s theatre tour this past Saturday….

I may have those dates in one of the Cove’s ledgers that I have. I will look and get back to you either way.
