This drive-in was located on Roosevelt Blvd. at the Phila./Bucks Co. line. The screen faces the hiway and when they switched to X rated movies all hell broke loose. Cars would stop along the road way to watch.
The furniture store is in the theatre. Before this it was a fur and coat store. The aud. was still entact with the stage. Have no ideal what it looks like inside now. rg
wHAT HAPPENED TO THE ELLIS THEATRE CIRCUIT. Does the circuit still exsist in name only. Are any of the family members still around. Can anyone supply with a list of theatre names. rg
The Barn cinema WAS built by Budco theatres which also ran the County theatre. Both of these theatre were in Doylestown, Pa. One in the boro and the other in the twp. Budco Theatres owned, operated and managed both D-I’s and hardtops in the Tri state area.(Pa. N.J. Del.) Budco bought the goldman chain out of Phila. increasing the number of theatres. Some of the theatres on the list are: 309 D-I, Bucks co. D-I, Mainline D-I, 202 D-I, Family D-I, Exton D-i, Airport D-I, 61st D-I, I worked for this chain as a manager and a dist. manager and opened this theatre. rg
Did you know that in the mid 60’s cinerama was moved to the Keswick theatre in Glenside, Pa. The projection booth was gutted (all 35mm) and the 3 system cinerama equipment install. Do to the size of the screen the stage was closed. It did very well at this theatre. This theatre was not part of any chain so this was a big venture for the owner. rg
This theatre after it stopped showing films sat empty but then became a stage theatre. They tried to bring in plays/musicals and rock n rolls shows (like the Uptown) It didn’t last long because of the area. At one point I tried to lease the theatre for movies but when StanleyWarner closed a theatre they just tour everything out so it could not be used as a movie house. rg
As a kid living West Oaklane the Renel and this theatre were in walking distance. It had a blue ceiling with clear lights, so you thought you were watching the movie under the stars. It was neat. After it closed it sat for a long time and then it became a church. The condition was very bad do to the bad roof. I was able to get the pop corn machine from the church before they moved. Today it is an empty LOT for sale. rg
The cultural center only uses the outer and the large inner lobbies.
The Aud. is the warehouse for a moving and storage company. To get to certain parts of the theatre you must get to them from the the warehouse. The owner was kind enough to walk me thru it. It was a nice theatre at one time. ray
THE THEATRE STILL STANDS. THE INNER LOBBY AND AUD. IS THE DRUG STORE. THIS THEATRE WAS NEVER TORN DOWN. IT’S LIKE A SHOE BOX WAS SLIPPED INSIDE THE THEATRE.
