Does the THX-certified Loews house still use SDDS-8 anymore? The last SDDS-8 movie was Surf’s Up nearly 5 years ago. The one thing I liked about SDDS-8 in some theaters in NJ (like in secaucus and clifton commons and Wayne) is the five channel directional dialouge (also used for music and some sound effects) alongside the two rear surround speakers. What was the first theater in NYC to use SDDS-8?
This weekend it’s all “Avengers” as the movie plays in digital 2D, fake reald 3d, and fake liemax 3d. Expect huge crowds for this film throughout the month of May.
I agree unclejay73. I think I saw Hook on a very big screen. FYI, Hook was supposed to be the first movie with Sony’s SDDS sound system, but was pushed back nearly two years until “Last Action Hero” came out.
Next week the NFL Draft will begin at the hall. This is a perfect location for such a big event, with most of the crowd die-hard NFL fans and media personell.
Don’t forget that UA also has its name on the first stadium seating megaplex in NYC, the Union Square 14, which opened nearly 15 years ago and became a huge success.
the movie was amazing, the projection,so so. It was intheater #7, which was dim, and was next to the imax theater playing wrath of the titans. During quiet moments in hunger games, i can hear sound coming from the imax and hear a rumble or two.
How was it, MGrennille? It’s still doing gangbusters after two weeks of release. Titanic is back in 3D, only real d 3D according to fandango. Also the prices for Prometheus on fandango are $17!!!
The #1 movie for the second straight week in a row is playing at this theater, “The Hunger Games”, which will still do well for weeks to come. What’s the next movie to play here? I hope it’s a mix between summer blockbusters and indie movies, since the Z always plays a mix of great movies. Once in awhile they have a bad movie that lasts only one week before they show another one.
louder sound will hurt your ears, not to mention digital projection can be blurrier when you sit close to the screen…this is why 35mm as well as 70mm film still looks better than digital.
Not only 2012 marks 100 years since titanic fell, but it’s also a year when red sox fenway park opened, Paramount and Universal were founded, Oreo cookies came out, and Whitman’s candies came out.
The world premiere of the Prometheus trailer (which was streamed on amc’s website and through their facebook page) took place tonight at this theater, along with a lenghty q&a featuring Ridley Scott and Damon Lindeloff wearing their 3d specs. Amazing trailer!!!
You know what will happen when a Chinese company takes over AMC…chinese food!!!
I remember when I first went to it in 95 and 96 it was called the Sony Imax theater. Glad that AMC kept the loews name.
Back when Time Warner owned a studio store and a cable company but not the radio station.
Nice logo. Next year marks the 90th anniversary and they should keep this logo for years to come until the 100th.

Later this year marks the 80th anniversary of this historic venue. Any celebration events?
