Parkway 5on

Famous Players opened this suburban multiplex as a replacement for the aging Capital Theatre in Downtown Windsor which was closed and sold to local interests for refurbishment as a venue for plays and music. I recall being at the Parkway 5 almost every weekend during the busy movie summer of 1989 when many blockbusters were released at the same time. Parkway 5 i believe actually opened with Tim Burton’s “Batman” on multiple screens, plus “Indiana Jones and the Lost Crusade”, the James Bond flick “Licence to Kill” and “Star Trek V”. “Terminator 2” was also a huge draw for the Parkway cinemas in the summer of 1991. I recall this cinema having 5 large theatres, but with very shallow grade seating stretching to the back. Wasnt surprised to hear the Parkway close when newer theatres with stadium seating were constructed nearby.
I still have fond memories of watching “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” from the huge balcony at the Centre Theatre in May 1980. For some reason, all the Disney and Kids flicks that came to Windsor opened at the Centre through the 1970s. I believe it closed in 1981 or 1982 and was quickly demolished. A McDonalds Restaurant now occupies the site.
This cinema/live music venue has been closed for sometime. Its in a very sad state, for at one time in the 1970s and early 80s, every big movie release seemed to come to the Vanity. Long line ups of ticket buyers down Ouellette Avenue were a common sight at weekends when the latest blockbuster arrived at the Vanity. “The Deer Hunter"and "Apocalypse Now” were two that my older brother got into to see. I saw “Star Trek, The Motion Picture”, “Star Trek II; The Wrath of Khan”, “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”, “Star Wars: Return of Jedi”, and the last Sean Connery James Bond film, “Never Say Never Again”. I believe the Vanity ended its run as a movie house in early 1987 with “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” which i also saw there, Many happy memories at the Vanity.
Saw several films here as a kid, especially ET which drew huge crowds to the Forest Glade Cinemas over the summer of 1982. Also saw “the Dark Krystal”, “Fourth Protocol”, “Backdraft”,“Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”, “Hot Shots” at Forest Glade.
