The Back Stalls area of the Auditorium.
The ornamented ceiling added to the luxurious ambience of the Back Stalls. The curtained balcony to the left is a feature of the mezzanine in Ballantyne designed theatres, and allowed patrons in that area to look down onto the audience in the auditorium below. They were curtained off quite early, but I for one used to sneak behind those in the Adelaide Regent to enjoy the thrill of watching the people below bathed in the changing light reflected from the screen. I can never remember anyone being annoyed by the behaviour of those who did this. Perhaps we were overawed by the sense of occasion of being in such a theatre. We always dressed in our best, and behaved accordingly.
