Aye it’s a Casino now. I remember the Rialto would show B movies in the 1970s…BLAZING MAGNUMS, THE BITCH, etc. Still it was a nice theatre in a great location.
A bunch of shoeboxes now. I remember seeing THE TOWERING INFERNO there in the 1970s and stuff like BATMAN and NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN etc, those days it was REAL theatre, and I remember portraits of hollywood’s golden era stars as we walked throug a long corridor to their flagship screen in those days.
I loved the Plaza. I loved the movies they used to show there. I still remember fondly seeing flicks from the 70s such as SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT, MIDWAY, AIRPORT ‘77 all the way up to the 90s with STAR TREK GENERATIONS. I loved The Plaza. It’s disheartening to know that they are turning the lower parts into a supermarket. Too many London theatres are dying now…Odeon Haymarker, Plaza, etc, the bastardized Odeon Marble Arch etc. It’s sad really.
It’s very sad. I saw wonderful movies there, A BRIDGE TOO FAR, BUGSY MALONE, RETURN OF THE JEDI. I went to catch THE HULK there this summer and was shocked and saddened that they had stripped this beautiful massive theatre into shoeboxes. It’s horrible, I really ache for my childhood when I see theatres like this.

They also showed press screenings here, I went to review a comedy here called CRAZY PEOPLE(Dudley Moore)in 1989 or so.
I saw TOTAL RECALL here, it was a great theatre with very friendly management. Sad to see it go.
