In was a real great movie house to introduce me to going to the movies circa 65-66. All Disney or family films, I believe, was the policy. A beautiful and special place. You don’t know what you had until it is gone.

This was a beautiful place. I saw a lot of things there, I think it was part of the Plitt chain, circa 73 to 76.
Jack Nicholson came for the world premire of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” a guy had his autograph
at the little Greek place next door.
I sat in this huge, almost empty palace on some summer afternoons for “Harry and Tonto” “Chinatown” “The
Conversation” and more. Part of a era in movie going that passed too soon.

I moved as a kid to Wilmette around the spring, I believe, of 67. The Wilmette was just about ready to reopen.
As an indie, it aforded me a lot of good times and helped with my film education. They used to bring back Hollywood classics, and had kiddie shows on the weekends, sometimes those horrible K Gordon Murry things. I saw all four Beatles movies there once on the same bill.
I remember them having a bit of a dust up over showing x rated films in the 70s. I remember when they played “Mean Streets” they had little signs warning you about the bad language.
I have just heard they are possibly about to close again. Too bad.
I hope they make it to 100.

My Mom says She went here every Saturday in the fourties to see the likes of Hopalong Cassidy. It was always filled with kids.

My Mother says this was the nice, class act theater of the neighborhood. She says there were actually candy machines on the backs of some seats, which struck everyone as fancy. She also says there was another movie house in Union City called “The City”, which you show no record of; the opposite of The Lincon in that it was a real flea pit.

I remember an article about the Valicia when it closed. It said Milton Berle had played there in the vaudville days; and that Ann Margret went there over and over to see “Rebel Without A Cause” (See was a student at New Treir and lived in Wilmette).
It was smaller and not as nice as the varsity, yes, they played second run and “B” movies. I saw “Fourtune Cookie” and “Born Free” on a double bill, as well as “Ben” and “Kansas City Bomber.” With the Varsity and Corenet, it was part of the Plitt Theater chain. When you bought a popcorn, it had a tear away flip and if there was a star there you got a free pass. I never saw anyone win.
