This reminds me that Cobian Plaza building (close to Radio City, Excelsior, Matienzo and Music Hall theatres) had a two screen theater on site, but was operated for a few years.
Ferretería Europa occupied just one corner (northeast) of the Centro Europa’s site. The Broadway was at the other corner, where the entrance to the parking garage and the a former Denny’s are located. In between, there were some buildings and a parking lot. It was, driving towards San Juan: Broadway, Minillas Tunnel, the access ramp to PR-22, Lloverás St. then Puerto Rico Theater.
It wasn’t destroyed because of the highway tunnel, but it was located very close to it. It operated for some years after that tunnel’s began operation (mostly as the Candlelight Theatre). The construction of Centro Europa was the reason for it’s demolition.
Actually, this cinema was originally a duplex until it was renovated somewhere in the mid to late 80s. I used to go there a lot since late seventies. There was (and still exists) a Baskin Robbins attached to the theatre (BR is all that remains of Wometco of Puerto Rico). Currently a Petsmart occupies the building. The final death blow was the opening of Caribbean Cinemas' Montehiedra Cineplex a few miles south in the 90s.
