Teatro Marti

Teatro Martí was a second-run, double-feature theater located near the intersection of Franklin D. Roosevelt Avenue. Sometime in the 1980’s after it closed, local show-business couple Elín Ortiz and Charytín Goyco reopened it as a television studio.

Robert, Thanks for adding all these theaters in Puerto Rico. When you click on the Map is it anywhere close to the theater? My guess is the theater is around the area of Plaza Las Americas Mall Shopping Center??

To try to be as helpful as posssible to everyone in locating a theater with a good address here is what I do. There might be a better way, but before I add a theater I just click on any theater on Cinema Treasures and then click on Map and type in the address I have and click on search to see what Google does. Sometimes it’s OK, but lot’s of times I have to play around with the address to finally get the right location. Lots of times I end up just using crossroads. Then I have to remember to write it down so that when I add the theater I have the address.

Anyone have more info or photos.

It is not near Plaza Las Americas. Avenida de Diego in Puerto Nuevo is closer to Guaynabo than Hato Rey.

The address here does not need more info. Going to Hato Rey from Buchanan or Guaynabo on Roosevelt Avenue, you see the Marti on the right as soon as you reach the De Diego intersection. It is right there. Only a blind person would miss it.

AGR, Cinema Treasures in it’s infinite wisdom, decided that when a theater was added an address should be in the header and it should be able to located on the Google Map. It therefore on the Add A Theater Form has spaces for the Address, City, State/Province, Country, and Postal Code. This isn’t meant just for local folks, but so that anyone in the world will be able to find a theater! What use is a bogus address in the header?

Hopefully Cinema Treasures will be around long after we have all gone to that Great Theater In The Sky. Perhaps someday after we are all gone someone will want to write a book about ALL the theaters that had been in Puerto Rico. In doing research Cinema Treasures would be a great resource, but “Going to Hato Rey from Buchanan or Guaynabo on Roosevelt Avenue, you see the Marti on the right as soon as you reach the De Diego intersection. Is is right there. Only a blind person would miss it.” That’s not really very helpful to that researcher years from now AFTER IT HAS BEEN TORN DOWN! It might be good enough for a few locals, but NOT for everyone on Puerto Rico or the rest of the World, THINK BIG!

As for me, I love Puerto Rico, so be a little more kinder and gentler. I’m now 47 miles south of Downtown Chicago, Illinois. My wife is not well so I can no longer go down to Puerto Rico and follow your I’m sure great directions. I may never get down there again. The ONLY way I can find this theater is on the MAP and that is the reason I ask for an address, that is as close as I can get to the theater.

If it has been torn down, a street number won’t help. Anyway, if someone writes a book about PR theaters it won’t be us who don’t live there. It has to be a local and will have to walk a lot and do a lot of research, that is why I don’t feel that here we have to be so specific. Anyway, that is me personal opinion. Good health to your wife and you and hope you will be able to go back. But believe me, it is not the same PR we left many years ago.

Bob: As with other Puerto Rico theaters I have posted and/or provided information on, the best I can contribute in terms of address will vary based on my best recollection: a street/highway, corner, intersection, block, neighborhood, shopping-center/strip-mall name, for example. When I was a kid, my family and I just knew where to go without having to resort to address specifics.

I agree with AGR that a history of Puerto Rico theaters will have to be written by a local, and plenty of driving and footwork will be needed. Best wishes to your wife, and thanks for your kind words about the island (yes, not the same, as AGR said).

I know where this theater is. Is at the intersection of Avenida Roosevelt and Avenida De Diego. It’s right next to a Texaco station. In the mid-80’s, it was used for Charytin Goyco’s productions for PR local TV station WAPA-TV. It was there were a popular children’s TV program was made titled “Que Angelitos!” with Charytin’s son Shalim. A game show was also broadcast live there as I saw hundreds of people lining up to get in. Sometime in the late 80’s, Charytin moved to Miami with her family and her productions were shut down. The theater went into obscurity since.

darkpitch07 and bohique: I was doing a search on Google Maps based on your information. As of February 2016, the Texaco gas station had become a Puma, and then I noticed there was a Banco de Santander close by. Was the Martí located where Santander was (I believe this branch has closed since) or at the building right next to it?
