The building to the right of this picture is the old Capitol Theater. The office on the left side of the Capitol Theater was a barber shop. The lean-to on the side was added after the theater was torn down as a booth for the parking lot attendant to take parking fees. The Capitol later became part of the parking arrangement it became an inside parking garage.
Nice to see that Arris Pizza has expanded. There used to be a couple of business storefronts between the Capitol and the pizza place (an insurance agent and a light store, if I remember correctly). I can still remember smelling the pizza while we were standing in line for tickets, even when Arris was closed!
The picture posted here is the site that was originally the Greyhound bus station, then later the studios of KWOS Radio when the News-Tribune operated the station. The Gem Theater was on the other side of the News-Tribune office. The ceiling caved in sometime in the mid 1960’s in a heavy snowstorm. The signage on the front of the building said it was the Roxy Theater at the time the ceiling collapsed. The Tribune bought the site and used it as a parking lot for their employees.

The Missouri State Library is currently on the site of the old State Theater.
