For a brief period in Chicago architecture, a word created was “Klafterism” and was synonymous with slipshod construction. And that’s traced to the collapse of the new-build Home Theatre in 1912 designed by David Saul Klafter. Because Klafter had another new theater, the Ashland, set to open, city inspectors found that the Ashland had 21 violations so egregious that it was condemned before it opened.
Later, it was found that construction practices after the architectural plans had led to the problems. Klafterism and what would have been called Klaftergate was over and his name cleared. The Home Theatre was repaired and name changed for rebranding purposes.
