The plan to add two further screens is still very much active, though these will now be built on adjacent land rather than converting any portion of the existing building.
For further interest: The current Screen 1 is located in the former front stalls area – the screen sheet itself being located under the front of the circle, and the back wall being the former proscenium. The projection box is on the stage. Screen 2 is located underneath the balcony. The original balcony is still intact and can be accessed via the screen frame in Screen 1 – all of the seating terraces are intact, as is the barrel-vault ceiling. Sadly the original projection box is no longer accessible.
A complete front-of-house refurbishment was carried out during 2010, together with the installation of Dolby Digital 3D in screen 1. Further work is to follow inlcuding the renewal of the screen and sound system in screen 3, and the full conversion to digital projection in July 2011.
The current Orpheus Cinema was refurbished during an ongoing program from late 2009 to late 2010. This included the complete renewal of all front-of-house areas and toilets. Multiplex style seating was installed in screens 2 and 3, and picture sizes were enlarged as far as the frames would allow. Care was taken to ensure some of the cinemas better “period” features survived. DTS Digital sound and CSS services were installed in screen 1. The cinema features digital projection with XpanD 3D in screen 3, with a full digital conversion due to take place in Septeber 2011. Current seating capacites are 90, 105 and 150.
The Atrium was refurbished by Scott Cinemas in late 2008, this included the splitting of screen 2 to create two screens. The current seating capacities are 81, 106 and 199. The refurbishment also included the provision of an outside roof terrace seating area. The roof terrace and all screens are fully licensed. Screen 1 was setup with Dolby Digital 3D, with 2 & 3 to follow during the summer of 2011.
