Roxy Theatre
In early 1926 the cinema was taken over by Richard Hubert (‘Bert’) Saul who had made a ‘tempting offer’ of purchase. After little more than a year, Saul became ill, leaving his wife Yvonne to take over the operating. After eight months confined to his bed, the 43 year old died 28th August 1928. Considerable damage was done by a fire on 13th July 1930 – but Yvonne Saul (b.1898) was not deterred by this, or the rivalry of ‘talkies’ which had opened at nearby Katoomba the previous year. Perhaps unwilling or unable to afford an upgrade to sound, the Saul family put the cinema up for sale in early 1932 through local real estate agent H. E. Webb.
