No sooner had the new Merrylands Cinema opened in 1928 than it was taken over by Alfred James (A.J.) Beszant [1886-1950]. It was run in conjunction with his Granville Cinema and became part of the ever enlarging ‘Western Suburbs Cinemas’ group - based at ‘The Cinema’ (later Civic) George Street Parramatta. This circuit had grown to 24 screens by the time it was taken over by Hoyts Theatres Limited in 1944.
