  • <p>Astor Theatre 659 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley, WA</p> <h1>Survival of The Astor Theatre Mt Lawley - Putting the record straight</h1> <p>In 1971 Ben & Anna Parri took over the lease of the New Oxford Theatre, Leederville re-naming it “The Olympia” - a dramatic change of policy followed which involved the screening of Italian, Greek & Chinese films. Major International acts followed, such as “Little Tony “The Italian Elvis”, Gianni Morandi , & Orietta Berti . Over a 7 year period the policy is very successful. At the end of the lease the Parri’s move to The Astor Theatre, Mt Lawley which they favour because of its centralised position.</p> <h1>Innovation and experimentation at The Astor Mt Lawley between 1978 & 1985</h1> <p>What followed at The Astor was a period of innovation and experimentation that extended over an eight year period. These are regarded as the Golden Years that succeeded despite a depressed theatrical environment. It is this writers opinion that The Astor would never have survived without the efforts of Ben & Anna Parri. They kept the candle burning brightly with policies of constant change, and It is doubtful that The Astor will never again experience box office grosses the likes of International Super-Star “Toto Cutugno”, and a string of major Italian international acts that graced the Astor’s stage, such as Riccardo Fogli, Lando Fiorini, Nino Reitano, Giacomo Rondinella. While Umberto Tozzi, Ricchi e Poveri, Lucien Taioli and Nilla Pizzi played the Concert Hall & The Italian Club for The Parri family.</p> <h1>Hollywood in Italian at The Astor..</h1> <p>Rocky in the Italian version screened at The Astor to huge figures. Italian’s love Rocky to the point that Stallone said he contemplated having Rocky’s last fight staged in the Coliseum in Rome. Other films in the Italian version to fill The Astor were Quo Vadis, The 10 Commandments, Ben Hur, Dr Zhivago,& Spartacus.</p> <h1>Three Dimensional movies at The Astor.</h1> <p>To offer a wider selection of product for the English market the Parri’s decided to build another theatre in the upstairs foyer. It was intimate, comfortable with good sight lines.The Paris Theatre in Hay street were screening “Comin At Ya” in 3D to record breaking figures. At the end of the season it was decided to shift the film into the Parri’s new Mt Lawley cinema complex. At the same time The Stewardesses in anamorphic 3D completed it’s Melbourne season and was moved directly into The Astor. Both films in the new 3D process played during 1981 to excellent figures. At the time The Astor was the only cinema complex outside the city of Perth that was equipped to screen 3D movies.</p> <h1>The Astor as a community hub & meeting place.</h1> <p>The Astor had a wide screening policy that included a smörgåsbord of regular play-time for English / Italian / Greek / R Rated, and Chinese Kung Fu movies screening on Sunday. Bingo was featured on a weekly basis attracting large numbers of people. The Astor was a regular and popular meeting place for many ethnic groups .</p> <h1>Social significance</h1> <p>Ben & Anna Parri are major Pioneers in West Australian Cinema and Live International Entertainment. A contribution that stretches across a spectrum of exhibition genres. Their tenure at the Olympia Theatre Leederville and The Astor Theatre Mt Lawley should be celebrated as important because motion pictures, live entertainment and the bringing of communities together continue to be a part of our lives and our future. Note: The brick wall in the upstairs gallery has been recreated because the original newspaper photo suffers from a lack of detail.</p> <p>The Astor Theatre has not always been known by this name. When it was first opened on 5 November 1919 it was called The Lyceum. Architect and owner-builder, Simon Bremner Alexander claimed it was the coolest building in the state. At the time this was due to the exceptional ventilation but we will reclaim the title for other reasons.</p> <p>The venue was multi-purpose back then too and on Tuesday and Thursday nights it was hired for dancing. The orchestra also made use of The Lyceum. Next door to the venue was an open-air theatre where silent pictures continued in the gardens even after sound made its way into theatre. -</p> <h1>Note: The Lyceum Picture Gardens were the first Perth suburban Picture Gardens to feature an upstairs gallery.</h1> <p>In 1930 it was reinvented again and named the State Theatre and State Summer Gardens and later in the ’30s it got a facelift and extensive renovations. Full houses at The Astor greeted Riccardo Fogli, along with standing ovations.</h1> <p>The Astor was now an international venue under the patronage of the Parri family.</p> <h1>Photo - Riccardo Fogli on stage at The Astor is presented with flowers of appreciation at the conclusion of his performance.</h1> <p>The 1980s became a pinnacle of success for Riccardo Fogli. In this period, the lyrics of his songs became more philosophical and his singing manner became more emotional. It was in the early 1920s that Tom built the Piccadilly Picture Gardens, which was one of the first outdoor film-showing venues in the inner north-eastern suburbs. It was a structure that fascinated the local children, as it was built to resemble a castle, clad in appropriately painted corrugated iron. Owing to the success of this venture he reshaped the entire site in the early 1930s, building an indoor cinema with an adjoining picture gardens – now rechristened the Civic Theatre – together with a series of shops providing second-storey accommodation and two blocks of flats. He was the designer, builder, and owner of this prominent complex that occupies the corner of Beaufort Street and Dundas Road. Tom chose the name Civic because, like the clock tower that looked both ways along this arterial road, it looks the same from both directions. Being a thrifty man, the earlier name Piccadilly was reused for the new flats.   • <p>Fiesta Theatre and Gardens 58-62 Scarborough Beach Road, Scarborough, WA</p> <p>Source - West Australian (Perth, WA), Wednesday 6 October 1954, page 40</p> <p>‘One Summer of Happiness’ at the time (1954) was highly controversial in Australia as it featured a close-up of Ulla Jacobson’s breasts. It was a must see for a generation of male teenagers and remains legendary in Cinema circles.</p> <h1>Nude swimming: The film’s nude swimming scene caused an outcry from morality watchdogs. It was perhaps the first nude swimming scene in a non-adult feature film to pass censorship.</h1> <p>  Anti-clerical message:  The film portrayed a local priest as the main villain.  </p> <h1>Love scene: </h1> <p>The film included a close-up of Ulla Jacobson’s breasts.   Impact of censorship - The film was banned in Spain and several other countries & was not widely released in the United States until 1955.   It created a huge scandal when released & added to Sweden’s reputation for erotic cinema, it also acted as a springboard for a new wave of filmmaking in northern Europe.   Other notes - The film won Berlin’s Golden Bear award.   • <p>Fiesta Theatre and Gardens 58-62 Scarborough Beach Road, Scarborough, WA</p> <h1>Photo courtesy of Tami Ryan</h1> <h1>Paul Gadenne writes - Just to complete the history, Fiesta Theatre was a picture theatre until the very late 50’s, was converted to a rock dance venue by Roly Burghoff and was the regular venue for Eastern coast act of Ray Hoff & The Offbeats.</h1> <p>Promoter Doug McConnell took over but subsequently handed over to myself, and Peter Anderson & The Midnighters for regular Saturday nights gigs in 1961. We presented regular dances and concerts there for at least a year and ventured to present prominent Australian rock star Barry Stanton in concert with other local stars performing like Johnny Young, Pam Bradley, Kelly Green (then Elaine Sherrit) and numerous others… we never made any money, but we had a lot of fun ..!!</p> <p>Sarah Hill writes - The 900-seat Fiesta Theatre opened in (1953), but may have been operating before that under a another name.   • <p>Wembley Theatre and Gardens 202 Cambridge Street, Wembley, WA</p> <p>Designed by Frank Coote and Samuel Rosenthal and built for Mr Alexander and J.L.C. Zelinski.
