  • <p>Lido Gardens Forrest Street and Marine Parade, Cottesloe, WA - Courtesy Cottesloe History</p> <p>Advertisement placed in The Daily News. 20 December 1935</p> <p>In 1935 Lou Hatfield, who had operated the Cottesloe Picture Gardens on Stirling Highway since 1924, developed the Lido. The architect was Howard Bonner, and F. J. Deacon was the building contractor. The complete building included a chemist’s shop, a cabaret and an open-air picture garden. The main entrance was at the corner of Forrest Street and Marine Parade. There was a large cabaret floor 20 metres long and 8 metres wide. The Broadmeadows Skyline Drive-In opened in 1958 and was the fourth drive-in to open in Melbourne. It closed in 1972. The Broadmeadows Skyline Drive-In was the first Melbourne drive-in to close. The site (possibly demolished?) was used as a caravan sales yard (name unknown?). The longtime icon and mascot of the Walt Disney Company, Mickey is an anthropomorphic mouse who typically wears red shorts, large shoes, and white gloves.</p> <h1>Mickey Mouse was a mainstay in Newsreel Theatrettes around the world.</h1> <p>The Times Newsreel was built in a basement under the Hay St end of London Court, for Hamilton Brown, who was then managing the Theatre Royal next door for Union Theatres. Brown also managed the Times, but employed a projectionist and sometimes an assistant projectionist to run it for him.</p> <p>Powers projectors were installed, with local sound heads – first X-L Tone, then Toughtone – because the theatre was so small that a lease and maintenance contract with the big firms like Western Electric would have been uneconomic. It held only 150, and opened in 1934 as a newsreel theatrette, screening continuously from 10 a.m. till late at night, on the ´hour show’ principle: patrons could enter and leave at any time and stay as long as they wished for the price of one admission.</p> <p>It survived only eighteen months, partly as a result of poor presentation and partly because of the general economic problems of the time.
