“Northeast Corner of Third and Brady Streets - March, 1963

This photo was taken on a warm March day in 1963 from the Whitaker Building on the southwest corner of Third and Brady streets. On the ground floor of the building was “J’s Stop-N-Eat.” The popular restaurant was also a news stand and tobacco store for bustling downtown shoppers and businessmen on the go.

This photograph predominantly shows the Hotel Mississippi on the northeast corner. The street-level businesses within the hotel building included Tom Watt Shoes, 102 E. Third Street; Britt’s Men’s Wear, 102; The Book Shop, 108; Mississippi Hotel Barber Shop, 110; Dial Finance, 112; Lewis Cleaners, 114; and the RKO Orpheum Theater, 116-118. Continuing east along Third Street were the Sportsmen’s Lounge tavern, 120; Herman J. Ziffren pawn broker, 124; Louisiana Bar-B-Q restaurant, 126; Siegel Loan Co., 128; One Thirty Grill tavern, 130-132; and Lindburg’s Coin and Stamps Shop, 134. In the distance is the Blackhawk Hotel on the northeast corner of Third and Perry streets.

Continuing up Brady Street, north of Third, was the First Trust and Savings Bank Drive-In office and parking lot at 321 Brady Street and Gehle’s Mobil Service Station, 101 E. Fourth Street.

Playing at the RKO Orpheum at that time was “Son of Flubber” starring Fred MacMurray, Nancy Olson and Keenan Wynn. The successful Disney movie played from March 13 to April 2."
