During the time of the John F. Kennedy assassination in 1963, newsreel theatrette’s across Australia were key locations for the public to view visual news through the screening of newsreels.

Universal Newsreels, such as “President Assassinated” and “The World Mourns,” provided Australians with some of the first moving-image accounts of the tragedy.

Australian Newsreel Theatrettes: These specialised small cinemas, often located in major city centres (like the Century or the Times, Tatler, & Albany in Melbourne, not-forgetting newsreel theatrettes that were stationed in every state of Australia.

Before the widespread adoption of television in all Australian homes, theatrettes were the primary way for the public to see international news footage.

Following the assassination John Kennedy on Friday, 22nd November 1963 (Dallas time), edited newsreels were rushed to Australian Newsreel theatrettes to supplement the radio and newspaper reports. Note: Additional reels were flown in weekly to up-date & add-to the original footage.
