Times Newsreel Theatrette 283 Bourke Street, Melbourne, VIC

The Times Newsreel Theatrette was a small single screen basement level theatre located underneath the Royal Colosseum Theatre/Victoria Music Hall/Melba Theatre/Liberty Theatre and finally Odeon Theatre. The Times Newsreel Theatrette was opened by Greater Union Theatres on 16th September, 1932 and featured continuous sessions every hour. The unique feature of the Times Newsreel Theatrette was its rear projection, the only theatre of its type in Victoria.

There was a name and policy change on 28th March 1969 to Times Cinema when the opening feature film was the sex education documentary “Helga” starring Ruth Gassmann. The theatre continued to screen films of an exploitation nature until it was closed on 2nd February 1978 with the Australian drama/thriller “Summerfield” starring Nick Tate. The theatre went dark and became a shopping arcade.

Most were below street level. These establishments screened continuous newsreels from Movietone, Universal & Cinesound, along with cartoons, Pete Smith & Three Stooge comedy’s – to name a few . There were no intermissions and it was possible to sit there all day! – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
