It was to be the second 3-D film designed and directed by William Cameron Menzies, known for his very “dimensional” style (e.g. many shots focused in layers). •
Inferno was one of the best and last movies to be made in 3-D during the boom in the early ‘50s. Certainly its use of space emphasized the dramatic possibilities of 3-D and reveals, as more than one person has observed, that the device had largely been squandered in other films made at the time. Commenced Nov 13, 1953

Film critic Dennis Schwartz liked the film and wrote,

Inferno loses something when not seen in 3-D as intended when released, nevertheless it remains as a taut survival thriller. It makes good use of 3-D, in fact it does it better than most other such gimmicky films - The desert photography by Lucien Ballard is stunning.

 •
Gala West Coast Premiere (March 24th, 1933)

 •
Hoyts Esquire Theatre 238 Bourke Street, Melbourne, VIC – “Around the World in 80 Days” 1957.

Change of policy – 1957 Represented a definite change of policy, with the upgrading of the Esquire in preparation for the screening of Mike Todd’s “Around the World in 80 Days”.

“Cinestage”, a 35mm process

“Around the World in 80 Days” screened at the Esquire in “Cinestage”, a 35mm process which produced a brighter & sharper picture than CinemaScope, with a marginally smaller aspect ratio. The result : an anamorphic print with 1.56 squeeze giving a ratio on screen of 2.2 to 1 – The Cinestage format was a reduction from the 65mm 24 fps. negative. In practice it uses the standard 4 track magnetic sound (AP) system, but with split surround. The change wiped out five rows of the front stalls.

Projection equipment at the Esquire utilized Gaumont Kalee 21’s with Kalee Varamorph lenses, sitting in front of Mole Richardson arcs. The sound was Westrex with Perspecta integrators.

The Esquire opened on Wed Oct 30 1957, for the gala charity premiere of “Around the World in 80 Days”. An impressive 15 month season followed which translated into 597 performances – Contributed by Greg Lynch –

 •
3D Presentation

House of Wax is a 1953 American period mystery-horror film directed by Andre de Toth and released by Warner Bros. A remake of the 1933 WB film, Mystery of the Wax Museum, the movie stars Vincent Price as a disfigured sculptor who repopulates his destroyed wax museum by murdering people and using their wax-coated bodies as displays.

The film premiered in New York on April 10, 1953, and had a general release on April 25, making it the first 3D film with stereophonic sound to be presented in a regular theater and the first color 3D feature film from a major American studio.

Man in the Dark, released by Columbia Pictures, was the first major-studio black-and-white 3D feature and premiered two days before House of Wax.

In 1971, House of Wax was re-released to theaters in 3D with a full advertising campaign. Newly struck prints of the film in Chris Condon’s single-strip StereoVision 3D format were used for this release. Another major re-release occurred during the 3D revival of the early 1980s. Warner Bros. released a loose remake of the film in 2005.
