*Catastrophic fire

A major rebuild was required in 1945-7 after a catastrophic fire gutted the building. Both Gordon Murphy and Reg Appleford supervised this, a difficult task in a time of shortage of materials and skilled labour, because of the War. It re-opened in December 1947 and operated as a single screen cinema (together with the Plaza downstairs it catered for 3300 patrons) for the next 23 years - Contributed by Greg Lynch -

The new straight edged proscenium

The main difference noted in pictorial histories of the Regent is that of the proscenium. The proscenium is generally an arch that surrounds the stage. The original Regent had a rounded arch, however the restored stage contained a square, or straight top edge – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
