I heard that the interior of this theatre was repainted in the last year to accent more of the plasterwork. Anyone heard anything? Also, I would like to see the symphony install some sort of “ grand drape” over the proscenium. That fire curtain thing they have hanging there now looks horrible. Any opinion on this?
After several attempts to find tenants, the owners decided to raze the theatre in December 1978 due to property taxes and little to no chance of leasing the building. Saddly, if they could have held on for a few more years, this situation could have turned around!!

Great info. Still too bad the roof sign is not restored yet! That would make the exterior restoration compltet!!
I was in Birmingham over the weekend, and was surprised to see how abandoned and unkept this section of the city seems to be. It will be hard to get investors to back the Lyric project until the city cleans the area up a bit! The Alabama across the street is beautiful though!
are there any interior shots of this theatre? Is there a stage?

I’m glad the organ is geing heard again. Stan would have wanted it that way. I think that the theatre is looking fantastic recently. I sincerely hope that the management will consider reinstalling the roof sign. That would be the final component to the completion of the exterior. If they don’t, they should at least take down the metal scaffoldinjg. What do you guys at CT think?

Is the current marquee a 1920’s original or a restoration of a 40’s or 50’s one? Also, can anyone tell my why the Detroit and St. Louis theatres were designed as “ twins”?

They should replace the current photo on this web site with a photo of the theatre in its restored form.
I thought that Broadway was in dire need of another theatre. Why couldn’t this one be uded? If Broadway is doing as well as they claim, why doesn’t the Shubert Organization or one of the other companys take over? It’s worth a try.
